The mall wasn't very crowded when they arrived, which suited Ivan just fine. It felt more like a date when there weren't so many other people around. How long had it been since they had really gone out on a date? It felt like a long time. Was that a bad sign? Ivan tried to not worry about it.
“Did you want to shop for clothes today?” he asked Amelia as they walked. Clothes shopping was far from his favorite activity, but he could put up with it if it made Amelia happy. Especially if their relationship was in jeopardy...
“Eh, I dunno,” she mumbled, looking through a display window. There was a short red dress hanging inside.
“That would look nice on you, da?” he prompted, and was disappointed when Amelia didn't seem happy with that response.
“You could see my thighs if I wore that.”
“Da,” Ivan agreed. That was a good thing in his opinion. He liked Amelia's thighs. The more he saw of them, the better.
“Forget it,” she sighed, walking away. Ivan's shoulders slumped. What was he doing wrong? He tried to compliment her, but it wasn't working at all. She was already heading to another store, and he hurried after her, trying to not get discouraged.
“Oooh, look at this! Ivan, come here! Aren't they cute?”
Amelia was staring through the window to a pet shop, and had dashed inside before Ivan could even catch up with her. He found her staring at a cage of tiny hamsters and laughing happily.
“Oh man, look at these things!” she gushed. “They're so fluffy!”
“Would you like to hold one, miss?” the store clerk asked from behind, noticing the potential customer's enthusiasm.
“Can I? Definitely!”
It was a relief to see Amelia smiling again as the man helped her pick up a little pale gray hamster and cradle it in her cupped hands.
“Aw, he's so cute!” she giggled, stroking his back with her fingers. “Look at his chubby little tummy! And he's so soft...we should buy him! What do you think, Ivan?”
“I didn't know you liked hamsters,” Ivan said honestly, a little surprised by how excited she was.
“I love everything that's soft and cuddly and cute, and this little guy fits the bill. And look, his fur is almost the same color as your hair. And...” She jabbed her finger at the sign about the hamster cage, which read 'Russian dwarf hamsters,' emphasizing the first word. “He's just like you! We should name him Ivan Jr.!”
“If you really want to,” Ivan allowed reluctantly, privately thinking that 'Ivan Jr' was an awful name for a hamster. Amelia gave him a little peck on the cheek and bought the hamster, a cage, food, a hamster ball and a few other things she felt her new pet needed while Ivan lurked near the back of the store, feeling oddly jealous of the attention she was lavishing on 'Ivan Jr.'
“Okay,” she said as they left the store, balancing her purchases. “I don't know about you, but I'm starved. Wanna get some lunch? We passed a food court on the way in.”
“Would you mind if I stopped by the restroom first?”
“Yep, I would mind. No potty breaks on our date. ...Of course I don't mind, dummy. I'll go ahead and order for you, okay?”
Ivan nodded and disappeared into the men's room, sighing heavily once he was far enough away from Amelia. The day had been exhausting so far. He felt tense and worried the entire time. What did Amelia really think of him? She was a little distant and short tempered today...was she really falling out of love with him, like he feared?
He looked at his face in the mirror and frowned. His cheeks were too round. Had he gained some weight recently? He had always been a little on the pudgy side, but maybe a sudden change was the reason behind Amelia's behavior. He didn't usually pay attention to how he looked, but now he saw that he had made a mistake there. Amelia deserved the best, and he as far from it. He sighed again, splashed some water on his face and forced a smile. There, he looked normal again. He didn't want Amelia to know that he was upset. It might ruin her improved mood. His smile softened a little as he thought about her reaction to the hamster. So she liked soft and cuddly things? That was so cute of her.
