Russia/Latvia angst (3/3)

Russia is in an excellent mood when he returns home after a long day's work. He is deeply in thought about the latest issues with his satellite countries when he hears a loud bang. The bullet graces his chin and hits the tree behind him. Oh Latvia, Russia thinks with a smile as he avoids the next bullet. Blood runs down his face as he chases down Latvia. He is not that good at camouflage yet. It's a lesson Russia plans to hold as soon as Latvia recovers from this upcoming beating.
“You must aim like you mean it,” Russia tells Latvia as he drags the smaller nation from his hiding place. “And even if you did hit me, what then? Would you run home and try to regroup as I recovered? Because I would recover and I would come for you with an army you have no chance to match.”
“I'm sorry,” Latvia sniffs.
“It makes me very upset when you do not stop to think about these things.”
Russia deports enough of Latvia's people to Siberia for it to hurt while Latvia cries in a corner somewhere.
“You must burn the weakness from your blood. No one will save you,” Russia says as he holds Latvia down. “You thought Germany was a savior for a while, did you not? Stupid, I thought you had learned better by now. You are the same as me, we have to save ourselves. Never trust anyone to not betray you.”
“Even you?” Latvia says and Russia is pleased.
“Especially me. I would rather let you bleed than my own people.”
Latvia looks away. Russia is glad, perhaps he would notice in his eyes that he was lying otherwise. Of course he would bleed for Latvia, for Lithuania and Estonia as well, but they shouldn't learn to depend on him. He never asked anything from them he wasn't willing to do himself.
“I don't want to hate you,” Latvia says and Russia stops cold.
“Why?” he finally says in wonder.
“I don't want to fight, I don't want to be an empire, I just want my citizens to be safe and happy.”
“There is no happiness or safety for us nations,” Russia says and it breaks his heart that he must be the one to teach Latvia these things. “If you don't have it in you to be a destroyer you will be destroyed instead.”
Latvia nods sadly. “I'll learn,” he promises.
“Good,” Russia says. Latvia has it in him to survive, Russia is sure of that. When he is given the chance he rakes his nails deep into Russia's arms and draws blood. He licks the blood off his fingers without even thinking. Russia approves.
