France/America (Dowry) - 7/? anonymous May 2 2010, 08:01:38 UTC
America awoke the next morning with a feeling of contentment usually associated with cats who have been into the cream. He was sore, and he felt it when he stretched, but it was a pleasant soreness, like that after a healthy bout of exercise. Which, he thought with a smile, he supposed he`d had. Beside him, France snored away - not loudly, but soft, breathy snores that caused the smile on his face grow. He sat up, watching entranced for a few moments before finally sliding his feet off the side of the bed.

Purple light crept in from under the room`s heavy curtains, the first sign of a mountain dawn. The floor was cold under his feet but his limbs felt curiously loose. He bounced on his toes, revealing in the new sensations in his body. Glancing around the room, he caught sight of a small book atop the mess of papers and letters on writing desk. He wandered over to it, giving in to curiosity and, with a quick look at the still-sleeping nation, flipped open the worn cover. Excitement surged through him as he recognized the contents. Quietly, he turned a page, mouthing the words to himself as he read.

“...It is not without reason, that he seeks out, and is willing to join in society with others, who are already united, or have a mind to unite, for the mutual preservation of their lives, liberties and estates, which I call by the general name, property.”

America started at the sound of France`s voice, almost dropping the book. At some point, he must have begun to read out loud without realizing it. He spun around guiltily. “I`m sorry!”

“For what? For all that he was one of Angleterre`s, Mr. Locke put down some admirable ideas in his works.” Sitting up in bed, France wore little more than an amused look. Tossing his hair back with a laugh, he held his arms out. “Tell me, have you ever read Rousseau?”

“No...” Setting the book back on the edge of the desk, America returned to the bed, eagerly sinking into the proffered embrace. His mouth opened easily to France`s kiss, warmth infusing his body as morning stubble scratched his jaw. He broke the kiss with some reluctance, but his curiosity wasn`t so easily set aside. He peered earnestly up at his bedmate. “Can I?”

France`s smile lit the room as he loosened the embrace in order to stretch an arm behind him and pluck a cream-colored pamphlet off the bedside table. The edges were yellowing, and France`s fingers traced the title with something like reverence. “Du Contract Social,” he read aloud, “-ou Principes du driot politique. That is, `The Social Contract, or Principles of Political Right`.” He reached out and playfully tapped a wide-eyed America on his nose before opening the book and continuing to read, translating as he went. “`...the laws being solely the authentic acts of the general will, the Sovereign cannot act save when the people is assembled. Every law the people has not ratified in person is null and void - is, in fact, not a law. The legislative power belongs to the people, and can belong to it alone.`”

He closed the book with a snap, startling America who had been spell-bound at his words.

“I - I want to hear more,” America demanded, his cheeks flushed.

“In time,” France assured him, setting the book to the side. He tugged on America`s wrists and used the leverage to roll them over onto the mattress. America blinked, his eyelashes fluttering a moment as he reached up to tentatively finger a strand of loose, wavy hair. France grinned down at him. “But how am I to resist you when your eyes shine like that?”

Embarrassed, America looked away. Remembering the threat from last night, he chewed on his bottom lip worriedly. “Prussia said he would eat our breakfast if we were late.”

“And start the war without us. Yes, I know.” France tugged off America`s nightshirt and tossed it off to the side anyways. “Should it come to that, I promise I personally will prepare you the very best breakfast you`ve ever had.”

~~End Part 7~~

Notes: Sorry this part was so short! Consider it an interlude until the next? Following parts will most likely be posted in Post-Part Fills III.

John Locke was an Enlightenment philosopher whose writings are believed to influenced both the American and French revolutions, as is Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Other influential writers include Voltaire, Francis Bacon, the baron de Montesquieu, and of course, ye olde Thomas Paine.

I love this fic so much <3
Now you have Rousseau and Locke! Curiously, I've never seen those two brought up in any fic before, which is weird, as the fic notes prove. America was lovely, being entranced, flushed and with bright eyes, when he hears their theories. How could France resist that, of course? I feel a bit cheated that we didn't get the sexytiems in detail, though *pout*

I like that America woke up feeling so great and loving. Great fic, hoping for a quick update! ^^

This whole story is just so incredibly sexy. I love your France. And now I want to re-read Locke and Rousseau, whom I haven't read in years.

Looking forward to the next part!
