Chicken Soup for a Nation's Soul -- Part 2e anonymous April 20 2010, 01:38:13 UTC
"Well...yeah..." Canada answered tentatively. "The things you two do, the way you guys interact with each very much effects the rest of us. I worry about you, America, I know you were close with him in the past and that you cared for him...a lot...more then you've ever admitted maybe and that...that...hasn't gone away even when you knew it should."

"It's just soup, Canada," America said tightly. "It's not going to change anything whether he takes it or throws it back in my face..." the last was said with a worried twist of his lips. "I promise I'm not going to start another Cold War over soup, okay?"

"I know you wouldn't," Canada said quietly. "It's just things have been better between you and I could understand if you maybe wanted to...try and recapture what you both used to...have.."

"I don't..." America said with a sigh, rubbing nervously at the back of his head. "I just don't...know...it's just soup, okay? Just soup..."

"All right, America," Canada said gently. "It's just...soup..."

America nodded and yawned. All he wanted to do now was crawl in bed for a few hours to get some sleep before the meeting. He glanced over at the clock and was appalled to discover what the time was. He gaped at it for a few moments before the reality of it clicked in.

"Is that the real time?" he asked sharply.

"Ah..." Canada said as he interrupted scratching at the back of his head to glance over at the clock, his forehead wrinkled unhappily for a moment and he glanced down at his watch with a frown. "Guess so...so much for getting any sleep tonight..."

"But that can't be the real time!" America insisted with a moan. "I wanted to give this to Russia before the meetings started...I can't do that if I'm late..."

"Then," Canada said with a roll of his eyes pushing America across the kitchen. "You better get going then."

America sighed wearily and nodded his head letting himself get pushed towards the doorway that led to the hallway. He glanced back at the mess in the kitchen and sighed. "But the mess...if I leave it it'll be impossible to get that stuff off later..."

"Go get ready..." Canada said firmly. "I'll get everything ready to soak...I'll just have to wear my suit from yesterday. No big deal...no one ever really notices me anyway..."

"Thank you," America said.

He turned and shuffled off down the hallway calculating whether he had time for a brief power nap or not. He decided it would probably be best to save that for the cab ride to the UN...just to be safe. If he fell asleep his brother would probably just leave him since the meeting was a volunteer presence one. He was well out of range before a mournful mutter from the kitchen seeped into the hall.

"The earth is doomed..."

Chicken Soup for a Nation's Soul -- Part 2d anonymous April 20 2010, 01:41:02 UTC
"What is this?" Russia asked in a voice that would probably be incredulous if it wasn't so stuffed up and rusty. He was looking at the thermos America had just placed on his desk like it might bite him.

"It's soup," America answered brightly.

"Soup?" Russia questioned leaning over to pick up the thermos.

"Yeah soup," America repeated a little less excited as he watched Russia open the cap and peer in at the contents it held. "Chicken Noodle...I made it myself...from scratch..."

Russia's expression of curiosity turned to one of suspicion as he brought it up to his nose to sniff at it. "You made this?" he asked.

"Yeah," America said with a frown, he stuffed his hands in pockets and continued hesitantly. "Canada helped."

Russia's look of suspicious melted a little at America's words which just made America frown harder.

"But I did most of the work..." he insisted quickly.

Russia's suspicions look returned and he sniffed at the contents again. America huffed and glared at the other nation.

"I didn't poison it or anything...if that's what you're worried about," he snapped in exasperation. "It was way too much work to make to ruin it like that. Try some," he said gesturing at the thermos.

"Maybe I will later..." Russia said doubtfully, he moved to replace the cap on the thermos.

"Just try it!" America snapped in irritation. "Here..."

He leaned over snatched the thermos from Russia's hand. Careful not to spill any he poured a small amount in the cap and brought it to his lips. He was very aware of Russia's eyes on him as he took a small sip. Then he quickly took another one making a noise of delighted surprise as it hit his taste buds.

"Wow...It's good!" he said. He took another small sip then he held the cover out towards Russia, the remaining bit sloshing around inside. "Here...just take a little sip..."

Russia eyed the cover doubtfully but when America shoved it a little further into his face he finally took it with a sigh and downed the contents in one quick gulp. He sat there for a long moment before his eyes widened in surprise and he stared at the thermos with a different sort of expression.

"Was it alright?" America asked tentatively.

"Da it was..." Russia trailed off seeming to search for the proper words then finally he said with a sigh. "...good...it was good."

"Awesome!" America said cheerfully, his grin only growing as Russia rolled his eyes. "That means you should be able to eat it all up without any problems then."

"I will try," Russia said.

"No..." America said firmly. "No trying, just eat it...it won't kill you and maybe it'll even make you feel better."

Russia opened his mouth, probably to argue further, when the phone on his desk began to ring. He reached over and snatched it up almost like he was relieved for the interruption. He turned his head away from America as he began to speak. America grinned slightly, he knew a dismissal when he saw one. He leaned over and replaced the cap on the thermos so that it wouldn't accidentally get spilled.

"Later," he said as unobtrusively as possible and then turned and headed back towards the door.

He felt good. He was glad he had gone through with his instincts and made the soup. True it had been more work then he had been expecting and true Russia didn't seem to appreciate the effort as much as he should but that didn't really seem to matter. He'd done a good deed and it felt almost worth the trouble he'd gone through to do it.

"America..." Russia voice stopped him before he could slip quietly out the door.

"Yeah," he said turning back.

Russia was leaning back in his chair the headset of the phone held slightly away from his face and his hand over the mouth piece. America waited for a moment wondering what sort of parting barb would be coming his way.

"Spasibo," Russia said softly.

America blinked at him in surprise for a long moment and then finally managed to find his voice. "You're welcome," he answered.

Their eyes held for a long quiet moment and then Russia turned his attention back to his phone call. America lingered for a moment longer and then exited the room and headed down the hall towards his own office with a slight spring in his step.

Yeah it was definitely worth it.

Sorry for the weird uneven section lengths comment count and my strangeness led to them being a little shorter then I would normally do them. The actual taking care of Russia will start in the next part...

Waaah, I didn't know this existed!! I loved the prequel fic so much; in fact, I love your RussiAme verses, because I can recognize certain elements in all that correspond to my headcanon for the two ^^
One of these is the recurrency of the friendship between them in the XIX century. God, I'm delighted Canada brought it up (in fact, Canada's kind interrogation were my favourite part of the fic so far...specially when he implies that America may be trying to rekindle their friendship...but he leaves it open enough for there to be more than friendship =^:^= )

America is so cute. I love all the little traits you gave him, like taking a walk back form work, helping little commerce, being hopeless at cooking and his goofiness but also guardedness (is that even a word?XD) when around Russia.

I'm sad we won't get a narrated version of that end to the prequel, because Russia calling America sick and England upfront telling him he suspects he slept with Russia in a less-than-platonic way are things I'd LOVE to see. And Russia circling Washington with a sunflower in the map ♥

(oh, and this is Spanish!anon, BTW)

Hey Author!Anon,
I read Some Comfort and I would like to say really quick, that I loved it. You wrote America's voice really well. I fit with his character but at the same time it was mature and realistic. I loved the last scene, it was really sweet and also carried a little undercurrent of longing.

Which is precisely what I love about this story. You've got the same things going on and there's more of that sort of confused longing, and just a little bit of hope that something between the two of them might change.

I also loved how you referenced their history together and how there may have been something there before the Cold War. I also loved the way you wrote Matthew and Alfred's relationship. Realistic without the angst.
I hope you can update soon!
