Come Dew, Come Rust [12/12]

Austria decided that he had never been so embarrassed in his life and was impossibly grateful for the cover Spain’s chest provided as he buried his face in it, face aflame, clutching at Spain even while he did his best to ignore the warm laughter that rang out in the room for the first time ever. He felt Spain squeeze him tight, lips by his temple.
“You’re so, so cute.”
Austria decided that there was some (not much) merit to being honest if it meant receiving that smile he coveted, but he decided that he’d had enough of honesty. There was a healthy amount of lying that went into maintaining long-lasting marriages and Austria was more than willing to continue to noble tradition of loyalty.
“I like you when you’re honest, so… don’t hold back anymore, okay? Just get angry with me if you’re angry.”
Austria flushed, but an important point came to mind and he calmed himself down enough to voice it without uncertainty in his tone.
“…if you want me to be honest, you’d better be too. Why are you leaving?”
He could practically see the smile slipping away from his face, but Austria didn’t move. He waited patiently, aware of hesitance that overtook Spain, giving him the time he needed to decide whether he could share his secrets. Austria was sick to death of finding things out from other people, and not from Spain himself when they were married. He didn’t even want to give Spain the option of leaving the question unanswered, but luckily, Austria didn’t have to wait too long to hear that reluctant voice.
“There’s been some trouble in English waters,” he said, the first time Austria had ever heard him speak of something serious with a proper sense of grimness. “They want me to talk things out with England.”
Austria tensed slightly. He could smell the possibility of war and he didn’t like it.
“I promise, it’s just a talk,” Spain insisted. “I’m not going there to pick a fight.”
Spain was an idiot. A strong idiot, but an idiot no less. He was stupidly honest, too.
“You’re sleeping in this room, every night that you’re in this house,” Austria found himself saying loudly into Spain’s chest, still embarrassed. “We don’t even have to do anything if you don’t want to.”
“Okay,” Spain’s reply was slow, but cheerful as he tugged the blanket over their heads, dipping lower so that he and Austria were at the same level. He wrenched Austria away gently and smiled at him. “I’ll fall in love with you as soon as I can.”
“Good,” Austria said forcefully. “The sooner the better.”

Hey guys, authornon here. Some notes to be perused. First of all, this is the first of three chapters I'll posting that will be detailing the entirety of their marriage. There are a lot of errors here and there which I will try my best to correct when I post a proper version. I'm not a historian by any means, but I have tried to stay as accurate to the history that I know as closely as possible (which I will admit I know little of as I learned close to nothing about Spain and Austria in history beyond the search for the New World).
Nonetheless, the fic begins some time after the union of Philip the Handsome and Joanna of Castile in the late 1400s. As it progresses, the 1500s plays out and several decades do pass in between, with the discovery of the South Americas by the Spanish (thanks drive-thru!anon!).
The second chapter deals with the Italian Wars and cycles through the 1500s and into the 1600s, so Romano WILL appear and I am relatively sure guilty Spain/S.Italy shippers will be happy with what I've got in store for him.
For now, I hope you've enjoyed the fic. My OTP is, admittedly, Spain/S.Italy but the more I write Austria/Spain, the more I'm hooked. This is my second fill in the meme so I'm sure my writing isn't all that, but I'm having fun. XD

Oh, this is beautiful and historic and lovely. I can't wait to see more: I'm quite interested. Austria/Spain's always been a side-ship to me, sort of... like, it intrigues me but compared to putting Spain with France or South Italy (or England, or America, or whatever other rare pairs are out there), I don't think of it often. This is making me rethink that.

Drive-by Anon says you're welcome though that's probably the only historical tidbit you're going to be getting from my direction...just so you know.
This fic is really and truly gorgeous. It's so nice to see something with Spain that doesn't soley involve Romano. I know he's coming in the next chapter but it still feels like that won't be the only focus of the fic. And by the same token it's nice to see Austria in a fic that doesn't soley revolve around Hungary or Prussia. As much as I adore Prussia/Austria it's always nice to see something else and this rewards beautifully!
I like how you talked about the ebb and flow to Nation marriages if felt very real and helps pave the way towards Austria's forthcoming marriage to Hungary which is looming ever closer on the horizon.

Stop worrying about your writing. You manage to give the setting some depth without breaking the flow of the story, and that's a lot. Plus, your characterization is top notch. I really like your Austria, and your Spain is just so Spain...
I can't wait for next chapter! Yay, Romano! (Favorite character? What favorite character?)
OH my! I spend a few days without checking the kink meme and then i find this amazing fic! I didn't even realise it was my request, as i wrote ages ago. And then I clicked. My happiness cannot be described, Author anon! I'll try to do some fanart for it it soon!

Oh anon, this fill is full of awesome. I nearly squealed at how embarrassed Austria was getting (so cute!) when he admitted to trying to look "inviting". x3
