Re: Last Tuesday (4/?) anonymous January 1 2010, 22:13:40 UTC
After seeing Suitti out, Alfred immediately pulled his cellphone out of his pocket and opened his contact list. He hesitated a moment before finally biting the bullet and selecting the name that stared up at him from where it sat at the very top and hitting Send.

The phone rang three times before going to voicemail. Frowning slightly, Alfred hung up and tried again.

And again.

And again.

Finally after almost an hour he was about to give up.

“One more time,” he told himself, rehitting send. “Then I’m buying a plane ticket to the British Isles and breaking down his damned d-”

There was a click as somebody finally answered.

“Why do you persist on ringing my phone when it’s clear I’m not answering?” Arthur’s tired voice asked and Alfred felt his stomach drop out as he realized that he hadn’t really thought this plan through at all.

“Uh….” he began, desperately searching his brain for an excuse. “I’m not. It’s my phone. Damn thing’s possessed I tell you! It keeps randomly calling you.”

“Really?” he could hear the disbelief in the other’s reply. “Alfred, in the past hour “your phone” has called me at least ninety-six times.”

“Well, that’s because you didn’t answer the first ninety-five!”

“Well, maybe I didn’t wish to speak to your phone.”

“Well, maybe my phone doesn’t like to being ignored!”

Silence settled between the two as Alfred suddenly realized how ridiculous this conversation was getting.

“Listen, Iggy,” he tried again, leaning against the counter with a sigh. “I’m sorry for…well, actually, I’m not sorry for asking you to marry me, cause I meant that. I’m sorry that it, uh, upset you? Somehow?” he paused, frowning at the continued silence on the other end. “Hey, did you hang up on me or what?”

“You…you meant it?” the other nation’s voice sounded wavery and for a few panic-filled moments Alfred was afraid the man had started crying.

“Um, yeah,” he replied, praying that that was not the case and that there was just a bad storm over the Atlantic or something. “England? Are you feeling okay?”

“What? Yes, yes,” he heard the blonde reply vaguely. “Did you really mean what you said?”

“Of course I did!” Alfred exclaimed, feeling mildly affronted at his friend’s disbelieving tone. “Do you really think I’d ask just anyone something like that? Especially after the whole ordeal with Mexico?”

He heard Arthur snickering on the other end and pulled back to glare at the picture on his display screen. “Yeah, yeah, laugh it up, Iggy. Ireland sends her love.”

That shut the older man up pretty quickly and Alfred grinned as he heard the blonde clearing his throat nervously. “But seriously, Arthur, I meant it. I want to marry you.”

“Oh…” the other nation lapsed into another prolonged silence. “What happened last Tuesday?”

“Huh?”

“The other day,” Arthur explained, “you said that you’d been contemplating this since last Tuesday. Why?”

Alfred’s eyes widened as his stomach decided that now would be a good time to reintroduce him to the breakfast he had eaten that morning. “Uh…y’know what, Iggy? Forget about it! You don’t really wanna marry me, I’ve got too many issues! So, I’m just gonna-”

“Alfred!” the other nation yelled. “Don’t you dare-!”

“Bye!” Alfred all but yelped, as he hung up on him.

A moment later, his cell began ringing again and the blonde jammed his finger turning it off before flinging it across the room and into the wall, where it made a loud and distressing cracking noise. He then proceeded to run around the house yanking phone cords out of the wall before collapsing into his bed to hide under his covers in embarrassment.

Actually, they aren't, but Alfred knows that Arthur is in love with him because he told him. Alfred teased him about it for awhile, but since he himself didn't have those sort of feelings that he knew of at the time, nothing ever came of it and they just continued on being "friends".

But then, something happened last tuesday that caused Alfred to realize that he DOES feel that way.

Hopefully that was helpful, I'm sorry that it wasn't clearer in the story....OTL
