Antonio was going to be pissed at him for running away but Romano refused to spend anymore time with those girls. He wasn’t even sure how many of them there were anymore and they all spoke in different languages. What was with the New World and producing girls? Spain hadn’t found a single boy on the mainland yet. Romano wouldn’t to play any of the ridiculous, girly games and was tired of sitting around bored. If Antonio could go wandering around, so could he!
The only good thing about the girls was Spain didn’t force him into girls clothing anymore, with so many girls to dress up. The lazy jerk still tried to get him to behave more ‘cute.’
Romano was very glad that he was just wearing trousers and a shirt instead of that maid outfit. He had been walking north for a long time now and the heat was still unbearable. The air wasn’t painfully humid like in Mexico’s lands but there were no more trees to provide shade.
A shadow appeared on the horizon. “Hola!” Romano called out before remembering that he was farther than Spain had ventured yet and only savages would be this far north.
The Indian turned around, leveling a bow with an arrow ready at Romano. Romano saw surprise but he didn’t wait for the Indian to think about anything. He ran.
He was pretty sure the Indian wasn’t chasing him. He carefully looked around, seeing only low bushes and dirt.
A loud crack echoed through the clearing and Romano slowly turned around. The bushes behind him were shaking. “Don’t hurt me!”
A blonde head popped out and for a moment, Romano thought he was looking at Liechtenstein. But Liechtenstein had green eyes like her brother, not blue ones.
Silently, Romano berated himself for even being scared. The bushes were far too small in this dry land to hide something scary!
“Hurt you?” The small blonde stepped out of the bush, shrugging off leaves. The white, lightly laced gown and physical features made the child seem alien to the New World but she echoed what Romano could feel in this desert. This was not a random European child somehow in the wilderness. A colony, like Spain’s foundlings but she didn’t look like Spain, like the others. The new colony was shorter than Romano and her face was oddly familiar. She kind of looked like one of the northern European countries but why on earth would they be here? These lands belonged to Spain! “Why would I hurt you?”
She spoke in a weird mix of European languages but Romano could understand her easily, unlike with the native languages of this weird land. Instantly Romano liked this one more than Maria, Fernanda, Isabella, or any other of the annoying girls Spain picked up.
“I thought you were someone else. What is your name?” Romano asked.
She shrugged. “Nihzoni says I am not ready for a name.”
“I have to call you something. I am Italy.” Romano held out his hand. “And you are…America!”
“America.” She said slowly and smiled. “I like it. What is wrong with your hand?”
“Don’t you shake hands?”
America looked confused.
“Here,” Romano grabbed her hand and shook lightly. “This is how we introduce ourselves in Europe.”
