"...The Deutscher Orden, that is - well, that's his current name, anyway..."
Breath in, breath out. Inhale, exhale.
And then the woman raised her head. Her eyes were crimson, now, instead of a deep grey. Ludwig felt his heart stutter in his chest. Yes!
"Oh, ho - the miraculous shrinking Gilbert, is it. - Just how big is the bloody bastard now, by the way?"
"...He's about the equivalent of a...human one year old, I think? One and a half, maybe."
The good thing about that is that that he was somewhat more talkative now then when he was - somewhat bigger. On the other hand, though, trying to make sense of what a sleepy one and a half old equivalent was mumbling about was... ha ha ha.
"But anyway - he wouldn't tell me what your name was even when I tried to bribe him with chocolate cookies and milk, he said I had to ask you yourself, and - "
"...Chocolate cookies and milk." The woman mumbled, and then her shoulders began to shake. Ludwig was slightly alarmed, until he realized that she was laughing.
" - Oh, all right, then. Call me Maria - Almost everybody else does, anyway..."
"...Maria."
"Yeah, right."
"The Duchy of Prussia. Which became the Kingdom of Prussia."
"Among other things, yeah. - One day you wake up, the Grand Master has gone Protestant, that bloody bastard is a comatose wreck being carried away on the backs of his Knights and hello, you're a Duchy now and aren't you happy. Um, what?"
"That must have been..." Ludwig chuckled. "Confusing."
"Damn right. But then Old Fritz came along, and I found - you, and - well."
"I know." Ludwig sighed. "You know - I don't remember much about my childhood anyway, but one of the few things I remembered once I started to piece things together was that I'd had some kind of elder sister, once. With grey eyes. - I missed her, you know."
"... I was always right there. Idiot."
"Yes, but I didn't know that. I mean, I did know my brother Gilbert loved me, but..."
Ludwig sighed, then.
"Please - come home. With me."
Maria kicked at the dirt at her feet, eyes lowered.
"Hmph. Well, I don't think Ivan would missing part of his Baltic collection - I still count as a honorary Baltic or something in his eyes, I think. Or whatever. I'm still sort of related to Toris, I suppose, even after... Oh, well. - Do I still look like him? The bloody bastard, I mean. Or more to the point - does he still look like me?"
"He's..." Well, how to put this... "Little Gilbert has grey eyes and ash-blond hair now, and I would say that there is still some kind of resemblance..."
"Oh, well." The woman sighed, yet again. "You know, all those years I was in his House - or one of them, anyway - I did notice that I was starting to look more and more like him, but I didn't notice at all till he was gone that he'd been starting to look more and more like me, you know? Stupid of me, but..."
"Gradual changes are hard to notice." Ludwig agreed, sighing along with her.
"Yeah, tell me about it. - Well, then."
"...Maria?"
" - Let's see how things go. Alright?"
Ludwig could do nothing but nod.
