Re: 52 Words for Snow [6g/??] anonymous August 14 2009, 14:19:02 UTC
“Ahhmmm...I-Ivan,” Alfred gasped excitedly, struggling to speak through his mewling “That’s incredible...hmmpphh...you’ve...” Moving the basket aside, the American was lost to bliss holding himself, so full and content, like an Egyptian cat god. Russia could hear that same melody stream into their world again.

Then blue eyes sighted purple, and America began crawling toward Russia, the red flag sagging from his sun kissed shoulders. Once on top, saddling his legs around Russia’s, America’s flaring toga finally gave way and unfurled. A little version of the Unites States flag, no bigger than a handkerchief, fluttered out between them. It was scalding hot.

Ivan took up both the US flag, and the flag of the USSR from Alfred’s hips and thighs, torn slightly in his frenzy and discarded them gently to the floor in one fluid movement. The battle had begun.

. . .

As he floated away around the bend, Russia watched Ivan and Alfred ignore their flags, and rip, claw and bite at one another’s flesh and nudity. Yet still those loving smiles persisted through their eyes. Any blood that was drawn vanished into the crimson bedding, like a drop of water in an ocean. Alfred never let Russia enter easily.

Ivan managed to hurtle through the stubbed nails stabbing at his beige-blonde scalp. And somehow in the flurry of motion, they were tied. As both neared the finish line, Alfred suddenly reared his head and roared a familiar chant:

“CATCH UP AND OVERTAKE AMERICA!”

“For peace and prosperity?” Ivan lazily shrugged above a whimpering Alfred, towards Russia, who had been watching the two countries from around the corner. Joined, even as they fell into sleep.

~ ~ ~

Eventually the dream dissipated, promising to reconstruct itself another day. Incidently Russia had pulled away from his iridescent dream, as he disliked lingering in fantasy, long enough to catch the end of the film.

Suffice it to say, Ivan enjoyed the story’s end, not because it sidled with his ideals and the ideals of the Soviet Union, but because it wasn’t what he’d expected nor was it simple to understand.

Exiting into the warm and hazy night air, Russia made certain the napkin remained secure in his pocket.

TBC...wow, getting lengthy here!

WARNING: Dream sequence confusing because dreams are very surreal. Also, I feel Ivan is the type of person who usually gets visions and premonitions(Since he can curse other nations, he probably gets alot of spiritual backwash).

A/N: Sorry to leave you readers hanging like this (Long and not very action packed chappy), but I wanted to try writing for Russia (Hope I didn’t fail miserably.) and to bring a little pity and humanity to his character, maybe have him contradict himself a bit. As for America, I’m trying to make him genuinely scared for Alaska (Since Ivan and Alfred’s governments are technically at their nuclear my~missiles~are~bigger~ego standoff), but at the same time he’s still the same hero-crazed, ballsy nut job he ever was, who doesn’t want to look weak in front of his enemy.
-Also, yes, there are many instances of play on words in this chapter. I wasn’t just being lazy.

Historical Stuff:
-Hints of the impeding Sino-Soviet split, that was finally realized in 1961. The Chinese and Russian partnership had been secretly dissolving since 1956. The end result was many clashes between the two countries within the following 20 years. Collective farming, during the ‘Great Leap Forward’ movement of 1958, resulted in the mass starvation of as much as 20 to 30 million Chinese people in the following three years.
-Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania were all countries nearly bled dry for mass collective farming initiated by the Soviet Union, while thousands of people were forcibly deported and exiled to Siberia and desolate parts of Russia.
-‘Les Amants’ is a beautiful French film from 1958, containing racy and bold sexual situations. My French is deplorable, so if anyone wants to correct the quote from the movie, please feel free.

Soooo...Dream symbolism/analysis: Anybody wanna take a crack at it?

Ivan's going to flip when he hears about the baby...Either he is going to be super protective of America and start stalking him everywhere or he's going to be all "Yessssss...Proof you shall become one with Russia, da?"

HOLY SHIT YOU'RE BACK. anonymous August 14 2009, 21:24:03 UTC
Seriously, I was worried you'd discontinued this. I was looking at the fills, saw this, and was all, "No way this can't be--" and fucking hell, it was.

Loved the build up in these parts. Can't wait to see how it turns out.

Nobody minds the lengthiness, I'm sure! *u* I rather like the way you write Ivan, and his interaction with Alfred.

As for the dream sequence... Erhm, I'm really bad at analysing any kind of symbols, but at least the little USA flag means Alaska...? XD *fail* I liked the whole atmosphere of the dream, though.

Humph...About that dream..don't apples mean like forbidden fruit? And the basket fertility? If I'm wrong don't mind me. Soo..them discarding their flags mean they look past their ties to their countries in order to "play" the game that they enjoy so much. Wao I such a nerd, I freaking love stuff like this >,< Thanks a lot writer!anon.

OP~here! anonymous August 29 2009, 00:14:28 UTC
Very good analysis. Apples usually have many different meanings. Temptation, knowledge and even chaos (Golden Apples of Discord), so I used this multi meaning fruit because like the different nations, it has many different meanings and perspectives.
-And bravo to you smarty-anon on the...heheheh...basket filling (LOL I'm DIRTY IN THE NERDIEST WAY POSSIBLE!), but yes a basket filled or being filled in dreams often means creation or conception(Or pregnancy, if your have visions like Ivan. He can't figure it out though because that wouldn't be fun).

Also nice description on the meaning behind the two forgetting about their flags. I wanted to add in how terrifyingly human they felt, but forgot to do so. Whoops...

Anyway anon, YOU GET A GOLD STAR! Props!
