England was miserable. England was snarkier than ever, sharpening his wit on any country or person unfortunate enough to get in his path. Part of his misery (and theirs) was that America was never around to absorb England's stings anymore.
Finally, more for their sake than his, a group of countries cornered America and demanded to know why he was acting like it was the late 18th century all over again. England did not know of this. France and Canada (France motivated mostly by the taunt that he couldn't get America to pay attention to him unless he took England out of the game) were in the group, however.
"Just leave it alone," America snarled, and they were reminded of both his status and that he was just as bad-tempered as his former Empire for the lack of conversation between them.
"But America, England really misses you…"
"He doesn't miss me," America scoffed, his face smiling but his eyes angry. "I wasn't worth the effort of raising, much less of missing."
The others argued a little more, but Canada and France, remembering that night in the bar, had stiffened and withdrawn.

Later they cornered England.
"You have no one to blame but yourself, Angleterre," France said, coolly, dropping a heavy hand on England's shoulder. "I have always said you were a bit too fond of your drink - and to what end, as you drink such ghastly swill anyway."
England opened his mouth to retort, but was interrupted by Canada. "He heard us that night, that night at the bar, after that conference where he made you mad - do you remember?"
"You hurt his feelings."
England gaped.
"You said he was not worth the raising. You wounded him in the heart, Angleterre," France pointed out. "And the last time that happened that I can recall, he put on a blue coat and asked me to bring my fleets over to play. You will have a time and a half of it, indeed, smoothing THIS over."
