apartment drama

Lookit me, posting 2x in one day! I remember the golden days of livejournal when I'd post several times a day. Mostly I'm on hiatus. I'm cheating on LJ with my MySpace blog. Ah well.

So apartment drama. Yes, Shaily and I need to move. Today I looked at two apartments on the northside. One was in NW Lakeview/St. Ben's/North Center/*insert name here.* It was, as a matter of fact, right across the street from St. Ben's and I'm pretty sure that the current occupant is a nun. The apartment, which was really quite beautiful if not quite a 2BR so much as a 1BR + office/den, smelled like liturgical incense and old lady. Plus, there were crucifixes on the walls in each of the rooms, including the kitchen. I had mental images of all sorts of dinner party fun ("Can I pour you some more water? Oops! Transubstantiation! Maybe I'll call you a cab..."). Anyway, despite the delicious central air, it was not worth the listed rental price of $1095/mo. The neighborhood was nothing special and I had visions of awful parking situations and small children running off to school at 7:30am while I'm trying to catch a last few minutes of delicious sleep.

The second apartment, though. SO promising. A 2.5BR in Lincoln Square on W. Argyle (I would kill to have an Argyle mailing address) for $1050/mo, which is more than we're currently paying but dear sweet jesus is this place gorgeous. Third floor in a 3-flat with an enormous (and well-maintained) backyard. Hardwood floors, all original woodwork, an enormous bathroom with a claw-foot tub, huge eat-in kitchen, nice sized living room, a huge walk-in pantry, huge walk-in closets. The first bedroom is on the small size but more than enough room for me since I lead a pretty spare life. The second bedroom is freakin' enormous with gorgeous french doors installed by the owner. It is big beyond all sense. But gorgeous. New windows (after my struggles with the windows in my current apartment, you bet I checked them out). Plus, I get excellent phone reception in this place compared to my nonexistant reception in my current apartment. And we have a 'view' of the Chicago skyline. And central air. AND an enclosed porch overlooking the backyard. Man, lookit me, talking like the place is mine already. I think the landlord liked us, though. New fridge, dishwasher, garbage disposal, and microwave. The stove is a bit dinky, but okay, I can make some concessions in the name of amazingness. Plus a locked storage area in the basement. I'm totally in love with this place. My only reservation is that it's a bit far north and we'd be dependent on the brown line...

Anyway, I'll stop rhapsodizing over the place. I really like it and we're going to submit an application but we're also going to look at another place on Saturday justincase. That one is the same rent that we pay now but includes heat which is NOT to be sneezed at.

Bah. Okay.
