"Fairies are legends," said she. "There's no such thing."

Even so young, Amelia Francine Jones was a defiant thing, with an undeniably analytical mind. While other children her age were lost in the clouds, their thoughts full of magic and wonders, Amelia insisted, in possibly not as many words, that she didn't have the time for such nonsense.

So she stood, arms akimbo, facing young Arthur Kirkland, whose fists were balled and face was flushed with his irritation. "They are not!" he said indignantly. "Just 'cause you can't see them doesn't mean they're fake."

And she just shook her head at him, her face saying that she knew she was right. "It's stupid. They're myths. Kids' stories. Magic isn't real, Artie, you know it." This awas what she had always known, what her parents had taught her to believe, that there's no use dwelling on what can't possibly exist. "You just don't want to be wrong."

He just shook his head, a mantra of "You're wrong, you're wrong, you're wrong," exclaimed as he stamped his foot, and he wondered how it was possibly not to believe something that was all around you, and he held back the angry tears that formed as she turned tail and strode away.

And a little thing, big eyes and tinted skin and gossamer wings, peered over his shoulder, following her as she went.
