“Get out!” Frederick roared when Prussia tried to enter his private quarters at San Souci.”I’m done talking to you, Beilschmidt!” He glared at Prussia.

“I’m sorry, Fritz, but we need to talk,” Prussia said. “I know it looks bad, but I wasn’t doing anything with her, other than talking to her. Fräulein Elizabeta is an old friend of mine.”

“You smuggled a woman in here! You know how I feel about having women here!”

“I asked an old friend to come visit me. It’s not my fault she showed up, wearing breeches. She likes to dress like a man, Fritz, hell, she’s been doing that as long as I’ve known her, and I’ve known her since we were kids! She can be so manly; at times I even forget she’s a woman!” Prussia’s temper was starting to get the better of him.

“Dummkopf!! How can you be so stupid as to not know the difference between men and women, Beilschmidt?! Besides, she’s the enemy! In case you’ve forgotten Hungary is Austria’s ally, not ours! She has no business being here in Prussia!”

“I know, as she’s told that me too.” Ignoring Frederick’s insult, Prussia took a deep breath. Holding it, he counted to ten in his head, before letting it slowly out. He continued more calmly, “I told you before she’s an old friend of mine and married to an Austrian of all things, and if I remember correctly, Your Majesty, you were all for a marriage to Maria Theresa. That aside, she wanted to know if we were going to give Silesia back. If you must know I told her, ‘hell no!’ Then she turned, got on her horse, and left. I never brought her inside, showed her around the grounds, which she would have loved by the way, or anything! I didn’t kiss her, or hold her, or tumble in the hay with her, although to be honest with you, there was a time I would have jumped at the chance to do so. I consider myself lucky I was just kissed on the cheek, instead of whacked upside the head.”

Frederick looked as though he did not believe a word Prussia was saying. The king folded his arms across his chest and glared at his former tutor and friend, who was now his lover.

“I swear on all I hold dear, Fritz, I was not dallying with that woman behind your back. I told you she’s married.”

“So am I,” Frederick said.

“I know, but I also know the last time you slept with your wife was when you married her. That was how many years ago?”

“Too many.”

Prussia nodded.”So if I tell you nothing happened, nothing did. I’ve been called a lot of things in my life, and quite a few choice ones by your father, but liar isn’t one of them.” He sighed. “And that’s all I have to say, Your Majesty.” Prussia turned on his heel to go. He had taken a few steps, when Frederick called out to him.

“Wait.”

Prussia obediently stopped. “Yes, Your Majesty?” He turned to face him.

Frederick frowned. He looked away and back at Prussia, unable to stay mad at him. “I’m sorry, Gilbert,” he said giving his beloved’s name a French lilt. “Please don’t go.”

“Yeah, well, me too, Fritz.” Prussia smiled shyly. “Although, next time, if you have a problem, talk to me about it. Don’t yell, just talk, the way I tried to talk to you about Voltaire.” Prussia, unable to help himself, made a face.

“Aaah… Voltaire. I had forgotten how much you like him,” Frederick chuckled. “And speaking of him, he’s coming to visit next week for the summer.”

“Oh…” Prussia looked about as happy as he sounded.

“Until then, how about I show you how much I love and appreciate you?” Frederick wrapped his arms around Prussia, pulling him close.

“Sounds like a plan…”

“Indeed...” Frederick murmured against his beloved’s lips, meeting him halfway for a kiss.
