Fixing a Hole

The stripy, light summer curtains billowed in the wind, nearly touching the two seated at the table in front of an open balcony door. The food was forgotten now and rapidly cooling, there would be coffee soon if the scent was anything to tell by and they both were expected to be back at work already, but for the moment none of that seemed to matter.

They sat as if frozen in spot, watching each other as if they had never met before although naturally they had known each other for quite a long time by now. The faint sound of traffic, the rustle of fabric and purring, soft puffin calls from the general direction of the kitchen filled the room along with sunlight that seemed impossibly golden that day, winking off of little pieces of dust twirling midair. They turned their heads down as if by mutual agreement and someone sighed and held his breath and the wind was browsing through a forgotten magazine on the floor and someone said:
“You know I would do anything for you.”
