Summary: Belgium questions America’s motives for becoming independent. EngBel kind of relates to this.
Belgium was very angry at America. He had just defeated the British Empire, the world leader with the greatest armed forces of their time. A huge disaster was going on over a little revolutionary war, though.
She was hurt because England was hurt and witnessed his world die when America left him for freedom. She couldn’t stand to see him upset, and would usually try to cheer him up, but now she could not do so because it would take him time to get over the loss of his baby brother.
She was able to question his motives a few years after the war to clarify why America had suddenly decided to sever the ties between him and his guardian. She tried convincing him that he owed a lot to England because he raised him and that she couldn’t understand why he was acting ungratefully.
However, she was irritating him with her argument.
“Belgium, you don’t know how he was treating me,” he began. “You can’t see the dark side of him because you love him. And, frankly, so do I because, you’re right. I owe him something. I’m not being ungrateful. I’m just trying to do what my people need. He was taxing me like crazy. And without even representing me! You have no idea how frustrating that is. I was so oppressed and sick of his ‘over-lord’ attitude and I needed to stop him.”
Their argument continued, but came to a halt when America hit a soft spot. “I hope you never have to feel the need to walk out of your brother’s house because you feel differently about how the way things are done. Just as England’s world crumbled a little, so would Netherlands’ if you revolted. Wouldn’t it be ironic that you’re arguing against a revolution if you did so?”
The true irony was that years later, she would decide she did not agree with her brother, either.
