Why This Must Be Read: Okay, I think dæmon AUs are really frakking cool. (For those not familiar with HDM, the gist is that every person has an animal companion, call a dæmon, which is a sort of reprensation of their self/soul. That series gets into the customs, etiquette, and other aspects of the whole thing, but this fic does a good job of making things clear to the uninitiated.) "Geothermal" explores what bringing dæmons into the world of Panem might mean, both in terms of the myriad ways that the Capital and the Games violate those from the Districts and in illustrating individuals (mostly Katniss and Peeta) in interesting ways. The worldbuilding is definitely the draw of this fic more than the shippy aspects-but you'd be hard-pressed to write a pre-Mockingjay Peeta without the latter!
