The story is framed in a wellpaced alternating of flashbacks and present time vignettes that works brilliantly to portray the protagonist growth and change - we see her returning to Mystic Falls after six years of absence, leaving finally Klaus’ side as they had once agreed. Bonnie tries to force herself back into the mold of the life she missed for so long while trying to not miss the one she left behind (and the hybrid that had so much of a part in the latter). Each chapter feels conclusive in its own way, so even if the story is still unfinished, you walk away from it feeling no lack of closure … you read on understanding Bonnie’s new and old history and realize that she is attached to an idea of ‘home’ and ‘how my life should be’ that is no longer truly part of her. And you watch her fighting that, because she thinks she should be able to wash away six years and return to innocence but that train is missed and she is the poisoned apple. Honestly, the more she tries to relax into the small town life style, the more the narration irresistibly dresses her suburban normal with sinister undertones - the reader stays on the edge wondering how and when she will explode. The author has a perfect grasp on both the theme and the mood of the fic and her prose is beautiful, her dialogues witty. It’s a masterpiece.
