Why This Must Be Read: Annie and Troy's high school years were really pretty sad and messed up. This story captures that - it's sparse and yet paints a precise and evocative picture of what life was like for both of them, together and apart.
Annie had a 4.0, so she wasn’t completely stupid; it was fairly apparent that no one really liked her either. People poured soup through the vents in her locker. She had a stack of faked prescriptions in her top desk drawer, and she had lost her virginity two weeks ago in the dark. She hated high school. And she loved Troy because Troy loved high school.
