Why This Must Be Read: Like man other fans of Terry Pratchett's Discworld series, "Nightwatch" is my favorite book, and Sam Vimes is my favorite character. If you pay careful attention it is mentioned in an offhand way that the present time events take place at the same time as another Discworld book "Thief of Time", a Susan Sto Helit book.
This fic takes that tiny detail and spins it out to its amazing, perfectly fitting conclusion: Young Sam Vimes isn't quite real. And what better teacher to investigate a not quite real seven-year-old than the granddaughter of Death (and girlfriend of the personification of Time)? Wonderful characterization, fantastic plot, and above all funny. My favorite Yuletide story this year.
Mods, I need a "ship: Susan Sto Helit/Lobsang Ludd" tag, and I need to mention that there is a discrepancy in the existing Discworld tags; Sybil/Sam is listed as "ship: Samuel Vimes/Lady Sybil Ramkin" with the male half of the pairing first, instead of vice versa, so I need a clarification on whether that should be fixed or if I should just use the existing tag, please and thanks.
