Why This Must Be Read: One of the big issues with this particular pairing (and with the Beauty and the Beast fairytale in general) is one of consent and imbalance of power. This particular story not only addresses that head-on, it kicks it over, bullies it, then sets it on fire. I love this story (and the sequel!) because Belle is definitely and intentionally Rumpelstiltskin's equal. She's chosen her life and husband and has done so with eyes open, and lets him get away with nothing. This story is a fantastic look at a marriage between Belle and Rumpelstiltskin, with all the romance, tragedy, humor, and insanity that this implies.

Why This Must Be Read: I deeply, truly adore Acciodoublestuffed's stories because there's a level of reality to their universebuilding that isn't really present even in the show. Belle (as well as Rumpelstiltskin) WORKS (physical labor!) in a way that pleases my little rural-raised heart. This Belle is quite different than the one we see in the show, in that she's Rumpelstiltskin and Baelfire's maid quite soon after Rumpelstiltskin's transformation. She's had a hard row to hoe, and this story is doing a fascinating job of shoehorning Belle's practicality into early!Dark One's worldview. Like the last rec, Belle is no fainting flower and calls Rumpelstiltskin on a lot of his emotional whiplash in going from no power to the power. I'm terribly interested in seeing how this is going to go, and flailing dramatically for a good (happy?) ending.

Why This Must Be Read: This is one of those stories that I vaguely avoided due to the summary because I AM OCCASIONALLY STUPID and own that. Not only is this story funny and smart, it's got Belle being taught how to clean by a midnight washerwoman and generally being her awesome self. But more than that, it's a really interesting character study on Belle and her role in the Dark Castle and her future. Both with Rumpelstiltskin and in her own self. SO MUCH LOVE for this story!

Why This Must Be Read: This is an absolutely fascinating AU, wherein Isabelle French digs in and deals with her incarceration in a way that's not only visceral, but slow and careful. It's very much an Isabelle story, but the slow (and utterly sweet and layered) romance and approach of Mr. Gold/Rumpelstiltskin is beautifully built and played. This is a fairly slow and quiet story, but it's honestly fantastic in pacing and character interactions. (Also, read Sparks' other story, "Price to Be Paid", you will NOT be sorry.)
