Why This Must Be Read: Rachel and Tobias were the first pairing I really remember actively rooting for. They were always my two favorite characters in the series and I shipped them pretty much from the first book on, but what I didn't see when I was a kid and yet is now all too apparent is how tragic these two are. As the war dragged further and further on there just wasn't ever going to be the happy ending that my childhood shipper self would have wanted for Tobias and Rachel. This piece is a wonderful study of how Rachel sees herself and Tobias, and the things she wishes would be.
That’s the story of her life so far, everything just the slightest bit off. Too tall to be a gymnast, too outspoken to be the kind of popular girl that people flock to, too much a warrior to be a girl and too much a girl to be a warrior. Rachel’s life is full of in betweens.
Tobias was somehow more solid, when he was human and dreaming of wings. Somehow more steady and relatable. Now he’s found something to fight for, and Rachel can’t quite remember what color his eyes were.
