A few more Gargoyles recommendations (various pairings)

Jul 25, 2012 22:01

Fandom Category: Gargoyles
Pairing: Princess Katharine/Magus
Fic Title: Do Not Go Gentle
Author: Nancy Brown
Link: Fanfiction.net
Rating/Warning(s): PG-13, character death
Genre: Romance, angst
WIP?: No
Special Rec: 12/20

Why This Must Be Read: Waiting for death in the hollow hill, the Magus reflects on his lifetime with and without Katharine. Her eyes touched to his, as if asking a single longed-for question. His mind thought of a thousand things to do, to say, and having those thousand, he could do nothing. He did not deserve to give her such an answer, not after what he had done. He could only watch her, until her shoulders fell just a tiny measure and she turned her face to let the sun caress her. He wondered then, and many times afterward, what it might have been like to have found an answer to that question, to have met her with a word, followed by a kiss, and then everything.

Princess Katharine and the Magus break my heart. There is so much wasted potential between them-- if he had been a little bolder, if they had lived in a time that was less focused on rank. But instead he remains devoted and fascinated by her, watching from the outside, unable to acknowledge the feelings they both clearly have.

Fandom Category: Gargoyles
Pairing: Anastasia Renard/Halcyon Renard
Fic Title: In Sleep A King
Author: Nancy Brown
Link: Fanfiction.net
Rating/Warning(s): PG-13
Genre: Drama, backstory
WIP?: No
Special Rec: 13/20

Why This Must Be Read: How Halcyon met and fell in love with a woman who was not what she seemed.

Halcyon has a pretty tragic story -- a mortal man in love with the fairy queen, not to mention his failing health and his strained relationship with his daughter -- and this story doesn't shy away from that. It's sad and sweet and fits perfectly into the existing canon.

If you like the story, you might like the companion story Hysteresis. It's more gen than het, so I didn't recommend it outright, but it's well done and it really fleshes out Anastasia's character.

Fandom Category: Gargoyles
Pairing: Elisa Maza/Goliath
Fic Title: The Wild Thing
Author: L. Mouse
Link: Fanfiction.net
Rating/Warning(s): PG-13 (it's all innuendo)
Genre: Humor
WIP?: No
Special Rec:: 14/20
Why This Must Be Read: The residents of Castle Wyvern speculate (via email) whether Goliath and Elisa are together. This is not a serious story at all, but it's hysterical. Also, the details-- the subject lines, the email addresses, etc-- are really great.

Fandom Category: Gargoyles
Pairing: Demona/Goliath
Fic Title: In the Gloaming
Author: Nancy Brown
Link: Fanfiction.net
Rating/Warning(s): PG-13/R
Genre: Romance, coming of age, tragedy
WIP?: No
Special Rec: 15/20

Why This Must Be Read: Demona remembers her days at Castle Wyvern -- learning to read under Goliath's tutelage and falling in love as they went. "I have nothing left to teach you." The lessons were done, and for the first time in two years, she had no excuse to be near him anymore, no reason to laugh at him or tease him, or creep up behind him, place her hands against his shoulders, and ask him to read aloud to her.

Another tragic love story-- this fandom is full of them. Reading young innocent Demona is especially sad because you know what's coming, and you know all of her tragedy is her own fault.

Also, if you had trouble with the link in my last Gargoyles post, I found the same story on another site so I have updated the link. Should be easier to access now :)
