Fic Title: sinking like sand

Rating/Warning(s): T
Genre: Romance
WIP? No
Rec: 1/10

Why This Must Be Read: spyglass_ describes this story as "four times Jane and Lisbon could have kissed, and the one time they actually did," and that's not the only reason to love it, but it's certainly a great start! Funny, sad, sexy, and sweet, this story presents five opportunities for Jane and Lisbon and delivers on each one beautifully. The writing is clear, the characterisations lovely, and the kissing is everything you could want.

Fic Title: How frail the human heart
Author: not_as_we

Rating/Warning(s): NC-17
Genre: Drama
WIP? No
Rec: 2/10

Why This Must Be Read: A lovely, almost bittersweet/almost hopeful look at Lisbon over the years and how her relationship with Jane could develop. This may be a little jossed now -- it was written in late 2009 -- but the writing is still sharp and beautiful and more than adequately sells the characterisations. Just wonderful.

Rating/Warning(s): PG-13
Genre: Drama
WIP? No
Rec: 3/10

Why This Must Be Read: A wonderful look at the first three seasons, and her and Jane's relationship, through Lisbon's eyes. Nicely written, my favourite scenes in this would have to be Jane on his couch, Lisbon on her couch, and the moments when they get a little too close to each other. Lovely.

Fic Title: thanks for the memories (even though they weren't so great)
Author: trustingno1

Rating/Warning(s): PG-13
Genre: Angst
WIP? No
Rec: 4/10

Why This Must Be Read: Fugue in Red was a powerful episode that delivered more in it's final thirty seconds than most episodes can deliver in forty-odd minutes. Carrying on from that scene, trustingno1 gives us a believable look at the aftermath with a Jane who is newly re-broken and a Lisbon who is only ever going to want to help him.

Rating/Warning(s): PG
Genre: Angst
WIP? No
Rec: 5/10

Why This Must Be Read: Hold On to the Painted Sky is a look into Jane's head and heart through the nightmares he can't help, with Listen to Your Heart Bleed doing the same for Lisbon's. Sad, hurting, and yet faintly hopeful too, foreverwriting9 shows us a side of Jane and Lisbon that the show can't. Wonderfully written.

Rating/Warning(s): K+
Genre: Drama
WIP? No
Rec: 6/10

Why This Must Be Read: The season four finale has sparked a lot of fics and this is one of my favourites. Focusing not on the overt Jane and Lisbon's scenes in the episode, this missing scene instead fills in the phone call Jane and Lisbon must have had before he showed up in her office with a gun. Pitch-perfect dialogue makes this a lovely, natural and believable moment.

Rating/Warning(s): Mature, Gunplay

WIP? No
Rec: 7/10

Why This Must Be Read: Do I think Jane and Lisbon would act like this on the show? Not exactly. Do I think they could? Definitely. The Mentalist has always had a dark undertone and this story brings that out beautifully. A continuation of the Code Red episode, here Lisbon gets a little revenge on Jane and Jane realises a couple home truths. Just awesome.

Fic Title: The Red and the Grey

Rating/Warning(s): T
Genre: Drama
WIP? No
Rec: 8/10

Why This Must Be Read: The Red and the Grey is a long, plotty drama that carries on from the season three finale with the belief that Jane really has killed Red John. So many wonderful parts to this story -- from creepy dollhouses to a new nemesis stalking Lisbon -- but the best would have to be the "Jane and Lisbon on the run together" scenes, and the development of their relationship from friends to lovers.

Genre: Romance, Angst
WIP? No
Rec: 9/10

Why This Must Be Read: What if Jane and Lisbon -- having met and worked together before his family's death -- had had something more than a professional relationship? I love a good "what if", and this is a great example of how clear writing can suggest -- and make believable -- a possibility you haven't previously considered.

Fic Title: Long Lost Long Last

Rating/Warning(s): K+
Genre: Romance, Drama
WIP? No
Rec: 10/10

Why This Must Be Read: I admit it -- I like fluff and happily-ever-after's and, with a show that goes dark more often than not, it's refreshing to find a long, plotty fic that delivers both. Long Lost Long Last runs with the simple idea that Jane and Lisbon have started writing notes/letters to each other, and carries that past the eventual end of Red John and into Jane's healing process. Sweet and bittersweet at turns, this may not reflect exactly how I see these two ending up, but it is a wonderfully entertaining read that hits all the right notes.
