I really enjoyed your manifesto--I've been writing a D/E story for het_bigbang and a theme that came up this time is Elena's sense of purpose--why she lived when her parents (eventually both sets) died, and it's been very interesting to explore and discover more about her along the way. I do love Elena; she is fierce, and messed up, obviously, because even though she presents this picturesque moral girl to the world, you know that being attracted to not just one, but two vampires really negates a lot of her morality. Just as Stefan pretends to be something he's not, Elena was also pretending. I think as she comes out of that, and as she embraces who she really is (*grows up*) she will find that her match doesn't lie in Stefan, but that's another manifesto.
Thanks for taking the time to write this. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Thanks for the thoughtful comment! I'm very glad you enjoyed my extensive rambling, haha. Totally agree about Elena's moral code being compromised by her love for the boys--and it is pretty awesome. TBH, I can't imagine either "side" being endgame... which is why my motto is OT3 FTW. :D That said, I do love my crazy ambiguously-canon mutual-deathwish ship, so I quite anticipate eventually seeing your D/E story at het-bigbang!
I TOTALLY see the possible Elena-Buffy parallels. If Elena gets anything like the development Buffy did, I will give my first-born to Plec & Williamson!
Well... mission accomplished, dude. You just opened my eyes. Thank you for this:
At the same time, Elena invests a lot into other people buying into that perfect facade, even as she resents them doing so.
it's simply that I find her desire to give up so utterly and profoundly human
she tells Jeremy that she's so sorry he's lost so many people -- but, well, so has she. The difference is that she no longer sees herself as an innocent. She never was.
Elena's forgiving nature emphatically does not come from a place of moral superiority.
Because what Elena longs for more than anything in the entire world is to be absolved, herself; to right the wrongs of the universe; to bring her dead family back. She would do anything. (It kind of makes you wonder where she draws the line--or if she even has one at all.) You know how I love suicidal girls with guilt complexes and hearts of gold. I just never recognized that in Elena before--so, thank you, my darling. You may have just increased my love for TVD by a lot

Thank YOU for the awesome comment! My face is a literal :D -- I'm ecstatic to have improved your TVD viewing experience! That's such a compliment, I can't even.

No but seriously, just when I think I can't love you more, you write something like this.
And as I was reading it, I could help but see parallels between Elena and later!season!Buffy, and OMG I LOVE MY STRONG-BUT-SUICIDAL GIRLS.
Anyway: Elena = best and also best face.

If two Buffy stans see it, does it make it so?
