In the-dala’s carefully constructed story structure, moments that seem like throwaway lines earlier in the fic come back as major plot points later. Her Elizabeth is flawed yet passionate and determined; and her James slowly but believably adapts to life aboard the Pearl, as he eventually discovers what he wants out of life isn’t necessarily what he needs.
And, um, the porn is hot, too.

“I loved you,” he says suddenly, the sentiment seemingly coming from nowhere. “I want you to know that.” Elizabeth sits down upon the bed. “I also” he continues, “want you to know that I don’t love you anymore. I lack the capacity to love anything anymore. Too much has happened, too much carnage, too much pain.”
There are tears in her eyes.
“But when I was capable of loving, Elizabeth, I loved you.”
ashtonecks (who is also writes under the name Wandering Child) weaves a poignant and brutal tale around “what-ifs” and “might-have-beens” and makes you realize that maybe-just maybe--in a world without carved-out hearts or hurricanes or cursed Aztec gold, the Commodore and the Governor’s Daughter could have had their fairytale.

Immediately post-hurricane, James Norrington finds himself travelling between the living world and the afterlife, making various stops in between--or, possibly, he’s having a fever dream (the surrealism and uncertainty of this piece is one of its strengths). Constructing an exceedingly thorough psychological portrait of James, meddow examines every doubt and fear that likely would have been plaguing the Commodore in the aftermath of the Dauntless’s wreckage.
Taking its title from "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner," this powerful, disturbing fic also makes excellent use of Barbossa-another man journeying somewhere on the path between life and death. Here, he serves the role of a Shakespearean Fool, as he is the only one willing to speak the harsh truth (although, in true pirate fashion, it’s largely because he just doesn’t care who he offends).

There is a brutal honesty between them, with leads to anger and scorn but also to a greater familiarity and understanding than either could have with any other.
artic_fox makes an affair between the two while on the Black Pearl entirely plausible within canon-and this added plot point throws James’s subsequent actions into an entirely new light. “Requiem” also includes some of my favorite sexual imagery found within this fandom, as James realizes that they have both lost too much self-control for his previous fantasies about what it would be like to bed Elizabeth to have anything to do with their present reality.

The small problem being, of course, that Will doesn’t *have* it-although it doesn’t take Elizabeth long to figure out who does.
Returning to Port Royal, Elizabeth and James spend the night screwing and screwing with each other, as both try to manipulate the other’s past and present desires, in order to achieve their own ambitions. tenacitydrader’s story is so well-constructed, that the entire plot turns on a misplaced word.
This is my favorite version of James/Elizabeth: both somewhat piratical, emotionally ambiguous, and beautifully messed-up in a Wesley/Lilah sort of way.
