Why This Must Be Read: One of the things I loved about the Cohen Brother's "True Grit" was the depth given to all the characters, and in particular the texture given to Damon's LaBoeuf (in contrast to the earlier movie) and the complicated connection he had with Mattie Ross. This fic is set during Mattie's recovery from the snake bite and gives them a lovely final moment they didn't get in the movie. The author just nails all of it from the unique cadence and word choice of the dialogue, to the period details (seriously her research is amazing), to the sparring nature of how Mattie interacts with LaBoeuf. It might possibly be one of the most perfect fics I've read in a very long time.
P.S. The author has just started a new follow up to the fic above, titled "What a Peace is Mine" which I'm not officially reccing yet because it's unfinished, but it's started with 17,000 word prologue that's a series of letters between Mattie and LaBoeuf in the intervening years and is totally engrossing all on its own).
