Why This Must Be Read: Scully dies in the line of duty and Mulder is sent to a mental institution, where one of his fellow patients gives him a chance to go back in time to prevent her death. Present-day Mulder goes back in time and inhabits the body of his 21-year-old self, who meets 18-year-old Scully at a party. It's an interesting concept, with a good characterization of young Mulder and young Scully. And, oh, yeah, there's a happy ending after all that angst.

Why This Must Be Read: This was written sometime around the third season of The X-Files and won a 1996 Spooky Award. Mulder and Scully have a bit less baggage here, which makes for a happier story. If you watch the first three seasons and wish for a happy ever after ending with those characters, this is your story. The premise: Scully is a virgin and makes a bet with Mulder that it's possible to have a sexually satisfying relationship with a virgin. She wins the bet in the first chapter, making the flabbergasted Mulder "her slave for life." The story and the relationship evolve from there, towards the happy ending, as both grow and commit to one another romantically.

Why This Must Be Read: This is another beautifully written story by Anjou, though with plenty of angst. The first story is set after the series episode "Tithonus," when Scully was shot. She is still recovering here when Mulder is injured on a case and temporarily loses the ability to talk. Mulder has to figure out a way to communicate with Scully without talking. Each story works well as a stand-alone, though the author is apparently still working on another chapter.

Why This Must Be Read: I hated the way the original series ended and this has been my personal, private conclusion to the series. They get William back, they band together with others to prepare for the alien invasion, they don't give up. It's well-written and hopeful.

Why This Must Be Read: This is set after the second movie, "The X-Files: I Want to Believe" and is a more satisfying conclusion for Mulder and Scully. It answers questions about Mulder and Scully's lives together, brings William back into the picture, and sets them on the path to a life together now that Mulder has been exonerated. Anjou is one of my favorite fan fiction authors. Mulder and Scully are in character and the story is beautifully written.

They investigate a murder of a family friend of Mulder's in his childhood home. There is a local story about a ghost who calls women who have lost their children or children who have lost their mothers. Guess who falls prey to the ghost(s)?
