Why This Must Be Read: This story is painfully beautiful. It's a gorgeous mix of nursery rhymes, poetry, and James Bond's thoughts and feelings. M's name isn't mentioned anywhere in the story, but every word teems with her presence. I like that the writer lets the reader fill in certain gaps; everything isn't painstakingly spelled out for you. But if you're reasonably familiar with Skyfall, you'll get it. This piece stands up to rereads; it never fails to leave me with a hollow ache for Bond -- and all that he's loved and lost.
