Fandom: From Dusk Till Dawn (tv)
Pairing: Kate Fuller/Richard Gecko
Title: El Rey by the Dashboard Light
Author: sharkygal
Link: AO3
Rating/Warning(s): Explicit
Word Count/WIP?: 7452, complete
Recced on LiveJournal By: zantedesha
Special Rec: 23/31

Why This Must Be Read: There’s only the edges of plot (you don’t actually have to have seen the show to appreciate the exquisite p0rn in this one), but there’s enough to understand the precariousness of Kate’s position - and to understand why she throws caution to the wind anyway.

We're glowing like the metal on the edge of a knife (Kate and Richie, and a sudden crash course in fogging up windows by neon light).

Fandom: The Last of Us
Pairing: Ellie/Joel
Title: hunger makes me
Author: endquestionmark
Link: AO3
Rating/Warning(s): Explicit
Word Count/WIP?: 8633, complete
Recced on LiveJournal By: zantedesha
Special Rec: 24/31

Why This Must Be Read: Unlike the previous rec, in this story the sex is almost incidental to the overall story. Knowing a bit about the background (The Last of Us is a zombie game where we follow a man and a girl - survivors of a devastating virus) makes parts easier to understand, but the story is so beautifully written, people should read it even if they haven't played the game. It's a story of loss, of clinging to the one constant (that if so, her death must matter), but also of connection; here, the virus works perfectly as an allegory for growing up, turning your skin inside out and becoming who you're meant to be.

If she has to share her body with the enemy, and let it turn her into something new and strange and terrible, then she wants a little more in exchange. She wants to look like it; she wants eyeshine, teeth and claws. People look up when Joel walks into a room, because there's just too much of him to ignore. Ellie wants people to look at her like that, as if they don't know whether to be afraid.

Fandom: Mad Men
Pairing: Sally Draper/Henry Francis
Title: the grown-ups
Author: arbitrarily
Link: AO3
Rating/Warning(s): Explicit, Post-series
Word Count/WIP?: 11786, complete
Recced on LiveJournal By: zantedesha
Special Rec: 25/31

Why This Must Be Read: Mad Men at its height was an intricate describtion of humanity, the good parts and the bad, the lies we tell others, the lies we tell ourselves. The grown-ups follow that pattern: Sally Draper, an entangled mess of loneliness and wants. The story feels like something both completely in the spirit of the show and something new; a Truth in it's own way. It's bitter, 'deliciously fucked-up' as one reviewer put it, and such a strong piece of writing.

It’s not that she wants trouble. It’s not that she only wants trouble. It’s just that she has something dangerous licking up inside of her, hot and fickle. It’s just that she wants things to happen.

It’s just, she thinks, that she wants.
