Why This Must Be Read: In Marvel's comics universe, Natasha and Clint are long-ago exes and long-acknowledged "work spouses," even though they both move on to more serious and lasting relationships. This fic does a neat job of exploring the push and pull of their relationship when Natasha starts seeing someone new while taking into account their respective, and respectively separate, lives, executed in a way that's both realistic and compelling, no matter which way you ship the Black Widow.

Why This Must Be Read: The fic is a compelling character study of Natasha-how she evolves from her childhood in the Red Room to full-fledged Avenger and how her relationships with with both the Winter Soldier and Hawkeye play into that evolution. As the title suggests, it's chillingly good in places, and though it was published way back in 2012, it more than holds up even in light of more recent canonical revelations.

Why This Must Be Read: Another story of Natasha over the years, "Fold and Freeze" considers how the Red Room manipulated its star pupil over the years, personally and physically and romantically and emotionally. The Winter Soldier figures into that story frequently, but the author doesn't shy away from the impact that all of that manipulation would have on each of them and on their relationship with each other, even years after the fact when they're free. Clint joins the story later, of course, and his role in Natasha's life stands in stark, compelling contrast to the rest.
