Prompt: AU; instead of dying, Yue gets a less serious version of her childhood illness after giving back the moon spirit.
I couldn't decide which medium I wanted to use, as I had good ideas for both... also, I'm not sure if it's what the requester had in mind; they might have wanted something a little happier, instead of unresolved.

The temple was dark, except for that spot of moonlight falling on her.

They probably arranged her bed that way, thought Sokka. Probably dragging her to this or that spot so that the moonlight spilled over her still form at least once every day. So that the Moon would see her at least once a night, and remember. Maybe feel a little sorry, and eventually give her the strength to open her eyes and smile again. She was alive, they said. She was fine. That was all they needed.

Sokka closed the door behind him, stepping towards the ornate block of ice upon which she rested. With a mattress between the two, of course.

They kept her in the clothes she had worn that day. She’d probably need a bath if-- when she came back. He tried to associate her and the stink of sweat, and failed.

Her still white braids were carefully arranged over her shoulders, and her face almost seemed to smile. Maybe she was snickering inside at the worrywarts around her, safe in the better place she was sure to be in - she had better be in.

His mind suddenly braked and flailed, groping around for some semblance of coherence as the treachery of his own thoughts hit him. She couldn’t be anywhere else but there. She was asleep, just as she was when she was born, awaiting the merciful touch of Tui to awake and cry, or hopefully laugh. But if so, was she locked inside, aware but helpless, unable to move or talk? Was her mind a blank, stopped at the moment she said goodbye? Was that better or worse than being free to roam the world of spirits?

Was she really alive? Was she as good as dead? Was there a soul inside that body? Was she wandering somewhere, invisible and lost?

Or was Yue shining down upon him, looking at her own mortal coil from a seat among the stars?

Would he see her face if he looked up and out of that window?

If she were there, would she ever even want to come back?

He was afraid.
