Questions and Answers
Looking up into the sky, Cloud could see the outline of the Highwind. The stars were bright, and he wondered if they were always that way, or if it was just the situation making everything more vibrant. He wasn’t really sure. He was so sensitive to things sometimes that he wasn’t sure what was normal for people anymore.
But the stars still shone brightly overhead, and Tifa was warm next to him. The others had gone off, looking for their own reasons to fight. Visiting family, thinking of their homes, thinking of what they had to fight for, to protect.
Tifa and him, they didn’t have much. Their town was destroyed, their families dead. All of it due to Sephiroth. Cloud knew why he fought, and he knew why Tifa fought, just like she knew his reasons. They had lost so much that it seemed like the only thing they had left anymore was each other.
Oh, he knew that they were making their way to new things, but, still, at this moment, they were next to each other, settling in to face the future together.
Curling an arm around Tifa’s shoulders, Cloud pulled her tight, resting his cheek on her hair.
“What’s going to happen next?” Tifa asked suddenly, breath almost hot on his neck as she spoke. “After tonight?”
“I’m not sure. I know we fight. After that.... After that, I don’t think anyone knows. All depends on if we survive or not, I guess.”
Her arm curled around his waist, and Cloud couldn’t help but feel a little warmer as she did. He remembered when they had first started out, how she always seemed on the edge of telling him something, and always holding back. Now that he knew what it was, he could see how he must have confused her, but she had held back, both with her secrets and her touch. Which was good, as he wasn’t sure if he could have handled knowing the truth at that point of time. But it must have been hard on her, and the fact that she was relaxed enough now to want to have contact with him was a good thing.
“I think we’re going to make it,” she told him suddenly, voice firm. “All of us. We’re going to get through this, and we’re going to find a way to beat Sephiroth. Then, after all that, we’ll go back to Midgar. Help rebuild. Maybe I can reopen the bar, and you can stay with me. Right?”
The tentative tone in her voice made him hold her a little tighter. “That sounds good,” he said, moving to whisper the words into her hair. “It’ll be nice to have a home again, and you can help me remember the things I forgot, right? I know I’ve forgotten a lot, but you’ll help me. I know you can.”
“Sounds like a plan.” She moved, shifting so that she could look at him, and they stared at each other for a long moment, searching each other’s faces. Cloud wasn’t sure what to do now. It seemed like she was waiting for something, but he wasn’t sure if now would be the good time for anything....
She made a noise, and Cloud found himself on his back on the ground, Tifa sitting on his stomach as she kissed him. With a small, surprised sound, he closed his eyes and kissed back, arms shifting to curl around her and hold her tight. This felt right, and he was just as willing to go with this as she was.
“Cloud, I know that we’re all going to survive, but, just in case....” Her question went unasked as she tugged lightly at his shirt, as if she was afraid to really do anything without hearing the okay from him first.
“Okay,” he told her, before pulling her into another kiss. The answer would always be okay.

She...this was nice. Curled up on Cloud, soaking up the warmth he was giving off, she traced her fingers on his skin. It was surprisingly soft, and she was somewhat amused by how pale he was. Her fingers were only a little darker than his skin, but when she pressed her hand against his chest, she could easily see where she stopped and he started. That might have made her feel a little distant from him, but not right now. Not when she could feel the beat of his heart under her palm, feel the steady movement of his breathing under her fingers.
Tifa was a bartender, and she had heard a lot of different things about first times, but this one didn’t seem to match any of them. That was nice. Ever since she had met Cloud again, she had thought he was special, and this just seemed to be another way to prove it.
Tomorrow was going to change everything. She knew it. Everyone knew it. It was why everyone had gone away like they had. Gone to think about their reasons for fighting. She had hers. Right here, pressed up against him as she was, this was her reason. Cloud was as good a reason to fight as revenge, and she hoped that he felt the same way.
“You okay?”
His voice was soft, and something of a surprise. She hadn’t realized that he was still awake, and she felt a little silly now, with her hand on his chest. “Yeah,” she told him. “Perfect.”
With her words, she started to move her hand, only to have him reach up and catch it, lacing their fingers together. “We’re going to be okay,” he said softly, arm tightening around her. “We’re all going to be all right, and we’re going to go remake a home for ourselves after this is all over. Aeris is helping with Holy, and now it’s our turn to do our part. I know you are strong enough to do it, Tifa, and because I know that, I know I’ll be strong enough.”
It was ridiculously sappy, but she couldn’t help but smile at it.
“You are such a dork,” she said softly, smiling as she leaned in to give him another kiss.
The end of the world might be coming, but right now, everything was perfect.
