Picnic
Something with this scene was very wrong.
L appreciated Misa-san, he really did. Even if he was positive she was the second Kira, she did provide some use now and then. It would be more useful if Light would simply sleep with the girl to get what information she might be hiding, but the other’s stubborn streak of honor wouldn’t allow him to do it.
Light also appreciated her, though he felt she got in the way more often than not. She was a cheerful girl, and all together far too distracting when he was in a situation like this. L still thought he was Kira, though all evidence pointed towards a third party.
Both the boys blinked at her, then at each other, then back at her, confused on exactly what had just happened.
Misa simply smirked at them, pleased with how her plan had worked.
“Don’t just sit there,” she said after a few minutes of them not moving at all. “Eat while it’s still hot.” Not waiting for them, she simply collected a bit of the food that was spread out on the blanket that was on the floor. “Picnics aren’t any fun if only one of us eat.”
She almost laughed when they both blinked at her slowly, and decided that, for two such intelligent guys, they were really silly at times. “These really are good rolls.” She offered one to Light, who took it absently. Then he started to give that slow, small smile that she so loved. If anyone had seen it, they would know why she loved him.
L didn’t even wait for her to hand him food. Once Light started to eat, he also began to gather food, calculations going on behind his eyes as he studied her, and Misa smiled brightly at him.
“I did say I wanted a picnic,” she told them both cheerfully, collecting a little more jam before L could get it. She knew that once he had, there would be no getting it back until it was empty. And it really was a rather tasty jam. She was sure it was cherry of some type.
Once she made sure that Light had gotten a bit as well, she set it down next to L, not surprised at all when it vanished into the little pile of food he was collecting in his corner. Nodding, pleased she had picked out something he enjoyed, she made sure to pass some of the different things past Light as well, since she was sure he would enjoy some of them too.
“Misa,” he said finally, looking at her, “you know why we couldn’t go, right?” He reached out to take the glass she was handing him, and even if Misa had been as dumb as people treated her at times, the clink and clank of the chain that bound L to Light would have reminded her of the reason. It seemed like something out of those boy/boy books she used to read, but those weren’t as fun anymore when she could see the real thing. Even if they hadn’t realized it yet.
She just had to make sure that they included her in when they finally figured it out. For two such really smart guys, they were really dumb about some things. Misa knew that she was nowhere close to their level, few people were, but the urge to swat them upside the head was sometimes very strong. She had refrained, as she really wasn’t a violent person, but, really, it would be a relief when they finally figured it out.
“We can’t go out for various reasons. Misa understands. You guys are trying to catch Kira, even though he should still be thanked for what he did to the one who killed my parents. But if Light wants to catch him, then Light will, with Ryuuzaki-san’s help. Just because we can’t go out doesn’t mean we can’t have dates. If you fight during this one, though, Misa will be most unhappy.”
She smiled brightly at them, and saw them both shift uneasily. Good. At least they had learned to not underestimate her. Well, were learning. It was easy to understand why they tended to dismiss people, but, really, she was dating Light, she would have thought that would have told both of them that she was smart enough to hold his attention, at least a little. He hadn’t shrugged her off, as she had seen him do with others. That alone was something special to her.
“Now, let’s see, what do you two like best?”
The tone of the evening slowly slipped towards something more comfortable. She watched as the pair fenced back and forth with words as they debated theories and statistics, ideas on why they had their thoughts on Kira. L still thought there was a chance Light was Kira, which Light simply brushed off, and Light was sure that they were closing in on someone if they could just follow the pattern of the new chain of deaths. Every now and then, Misa would add in her own words, and was pleased to see when they would pause and look at her, then see what she meant and take the new angle she had given them.
Sometimes, it was simply fascinating to watch them work. They were both so intelligent it was frightening, and she could see why some people held their distance. They were afraid of things they couldn’t understand, and if there were ever two people who were ever hard to understand, it was Light and L. They spun out their ideas, leaping from point to point in their logic that it was nearly impossible for anyone to follow. Only because she had been spending so much time with them let Misa see how they got from point to point at times, and sometimes, she didn’t even get that.
She wasn’t as smart as them. It was okay. Nobody was.
But she had managed to get them where she wanted them, all without their knowledge, so she was more than a little pleased with herself.
Now, to get them to see each other a little more, and she’d be quite happy with her life.
