It wasn’t that they didn’t work together well. The problem was very much the opposite. Once one got past the snipping and the sarcasm and the random arguments on religion, they got what they wanted done.

Neither Integra nor Maxwell were exactly thrilled with that, as that meant when their various organizations required some type of interaction, it was them that were forced to do so.

They still hated one another. That was a given. One of the first agreements they worked out, however, were that the terms “cow” and “pig” and all variation of both were no longer allowed to be spoken unless the actual animal was the cause of it.

Alucard had found that unbelievably funny. Integra had forced him to go take his new toy and to go do something far away from her. It was hard enough to not shoot the irritating church man in the head, especially not when working with him was causing her grief in her own home.

It was the oddest thing, working with him. They spat and growled in completely civil tones and managed to not kill one another, so that was accepted as a win.

It was well known that the main goal was to deal with their mutual enemy, but it was…odd with how well they worked together. Integra had wondered why God disliked her this way at times; she really did, though she would never voice those thoughts.

“You enjoy your time with him, do you not?” Alucard had all but purred one night.

“No,” she had snapped, expression cool. No, she did not enjoy her time dealing with that egotistical, arrogant pig of a man. He did not like her, she did not like it, and it was as easy as that.

Alucard’s little police girl had started to give her understanding looks, and it was only timely interception from Walter that kept the child from ending up being sent to do some horribly embarrassing job.

Walter was a dream. Simple as that.

Sitting in front of the fireplace, Integra thought about what had been happening. The little touches, the little conversations. Smoke drifting up around her, the smell of the tobacco filling the air as she struggled to make sense of what everyone else apparently saw besides her.

It was frustrating to no end with all the looks and comments she was getting from the ones who she dealt with on a regular basis. It was simply too hard to attempt to figure out everything. She refused to believe it was what people seemed to hope it was. The very idea was somewhat disturbing.

There was a light knock on the door, and Walter escorted the very man who was causing all the problems. There was Maxwell, standing there -smirking- at her. She felt his smirk even before she looked at him.

Feeling the tension, Walter hesitated when she dismissed him. She looked at him and, after a moment, he slipped out the door.

Then Maxwell and she were alone.

That’s when the man kissed her.

Oh, the look on her face was priceless. Completely so. If only he had a camera, he would have been able to capture that look for eternity. It would have been framed and placed on his wall, to be enjoyed everyday.

Smiling almost serenely, Maxwell waited for the blonde’s mouth to stop gaping.

“You prefer the use of fish over cow, do you?” he asked after a moment of complete and total silence.

The woman flushed, eyes narrowing, jaw snapping shut as she almost growled. Eyes glinting with anger, Integra jerked back, hands clenched into fists.

“What was -that- for?” she hissed, cheeks flushed.

He hummed softly, smiling in amusement. “What, are you surprised? Given the looks you’ve been giving me lately I felt I had the right idea.” He smirked a bit more. “Or will you deny that you have been looking like that? Looking like you were interested in something more than just a working relationship.”

“You are a lecherous man,” she all but growled, sounding much like her pet vampire.

“Oh, it’s not like I intend on doing this ever again, you know,” he said lightly, turning to look at the fire. “It’s not at all practical, and I did it mostly to do it and have it clear out from the air. After all, we are doing important work that affects both our organizations.”

Still scowling a bit, Integra nodded, turning her back to the fire so her face was in shadows. “True. What we do here can possibly save our groups in a worse case scenario, if Millennium does managed to do what they plan. Which is the only reason we are here.”

Her voice was remarkably steady given how she had sounded just moments before. “I will not let this interfere with what we are trying to do. But if you do it again, I will be forced to harm you in some way. Do you understand?”

“What, do you not plan on sending your pet monster after me? Much better than I expected.”

Now Integra was the one who smirked. “Oh, I do not limit his actions quite much. If he discovers of this little incident, well, the actions he takes are his own.”

“Well, aren’t you the vicious little thing, aren’t you? No wonder you have been able to hold your place where you do.” Maxwell settled back into the chair. “Please, sit. We do have a great deal of work to do tonight before we take our rest.”

Integra sat and looked at him. “This would have never worked, even if you hadn’t been a completely arrogant boar over it.”

Maxwell nodded in agreement. “No, it never would have. But I will admit…. The chance to see you look so completely stunned was far too much to pass up, not to mention the chance to get it done and over with.”

“Quite right,” she agreed, eyes glittering with something, Maxwell wasn’t able to tell what.
“This will never be spoken of again.”

“Agreed. It won’t be. And it will never happen again as well.”

“Agreed.”
