Fringe 1x06
I need more free time to watch this show. Not because I am enjoying it. But because I know, through fannish osmosis, that it gets better and Olivia gets better and it will become enjoyable. And so I should be patient. But as of 1x06...oof.
I think I'm not clicking with a few fundamental things.
1. It's a J.J. Abrams show. I don't trust that man and will never trust that man. Given anything longer than two hours, he tends to wander off into nonsense land.
2. God help me, but I'm missing the bureaucracy. I know this is a cheesy sci-fi show which is clearly not exactly set in the world we know, but every time Olivia mobilizes some massive task force based on nothing, or Walter blithely reveals some shady government-sponsored evil from the past, I'm like, WHERE IS THE RED TAPE? THIS WOULD NEVER HAPPEN IN REAL LIFE. Also, how is Astrid working with them without the same security clearance? I don't recall that being given to her onscreen.
3. I want to strap Olivia to a chair and make her read the Fourth Amendment and all related case law. (How ironic, Pacey bitching about signing away his constitutional rights.) I have a hard time getting behind her ass-kicking when I don't like how she does her job.
I will keep going, because I see the promise. I do like the traditional gender role reversals and Olivia's speech about using her emotions at work, and Walter is a delight (when you forget that he's basically Dr. Mengele). But I hope it picks up soon.
Actually, what concerns me most is that we keep forgetting how GROSS this show is, so we keep settling down to watch it while eating dinner or lunch or whatever, and then having to go "OH FUCK I can't eat now auuggghhh!" :-p
