Call the Midwife

I'm so fricking tired, people! The weather and Southeastern being shit and being suuuuper busy at work is just adding up to me being wiped out by the time I get to dinner. Oh also the sodding foxes that think it's great fun to have a fight in my garden, they can fuck right off.

ANYWAY. For this week's update, I am going to talk about the latest episode of Call the Midwife, because it was great. There are lots of CTM spoilers in this entry and a spoiler for the last series of Last Tango In Halifax.

I absolutely LOVE Call the Midwife. It's an amazing show, fantastically acted, well written, wall-to-wall women, set in London (yes, I'm still that predictable) etc etc etc. I just love it. One of the good and bad things about CTM is how slowly the character development moves. Good because the characters really have time to develop, bad because sometimes you just want them to get on with it.

A couple of series ago, a new midwife was introduced. This is Patience (Patsy) Mount:

In her first series, there was a tiiiiiiiiiiny hint that Patsy might be a lesbian. Basically, another midwife noticed a mirror (I think, it's been a while) she had, she said it was from someone special to her and then looked conflicted. And look, I know this doesn't sound like much but given the speed CTM moves, a bunch of people including me perked up. And then the series finished! UNHELPFUL.

So in the NEXT series it turned out that - YES - Patsy was a lesbian. And she had a girlfriend! Considering I'd been expected a massive pile of angst, this was a really good development. And her girlfriend was lovely! And they were going to move in together!

AND THEN somebody decided to ruin it, as Delia (the girlfriend) was hit by a car, ended up in hospital and lost her memory, and her mother took her back home to Wales. It was very upsetting, especially as no-one else knew so Patsy was dealing with it on her own, and then again the sodding series finished.

This was on TV around the same time as the last series of Last Tango In Halifax, which also had a bullshit plotline where a lesbian got killed off in a car crash on a significant day. It was pretty disappointing all round BUT BUT BUT apparently someone was paying attention (I do not believe it was all planned out like this from the start because that would be some really bizarre plotting) and in the Christmas special, Patsy saw Delia by chance in London, and it turned out that Delia's mother had been holding on to letters and telling Patsy that Delia was still incredibly ill when she wasn't and they got to see each other again. JOY!

So the new series started on Sunday, and Delia gets confirmation that she can come back to work in London BUT her mother won't let her and emotionally blackmails her to stay in Wales, so throughout the episode she and Patsy are happy and then sad and it was going to be super disappointing but at the last minute Head Nun Jenny Agutter says that Delia can come and live at Nonnatus House with the midwives, and Delia's mum reluctantly agrees because it turns out you cannot argue with nuns! BOOM, happy lesbians. Let's hope it lasts and nobody gets hit by a car this time.

In case you're interested (and there is a lot to recommend the show beyond lesbians, see above), the current series is on BBC One, Sundays at 8, and the first episode is on iplayer: www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b06ymtmb/call-the-midwife-series-5-episode-1
