I tried to reply to this twice last night, but lj mobile still hasn't got over whatever it has against comments, gah.

It was less actiony, but the bits I've watched (s6 onwards) weren't particularly...dry? IDK, there are bits when particular techniques are used (facial reconstruction comes up a lot) but they tend to be used enough for viewers to be familiar with the concept and then just mentioned afterwards.

From what I know of the Sam Ryan years (based on s6-8) it probably was more evidence-based, because she was the main character on her own and would mostly have been dealing with police etc who had a vested interest in the bodies/findings, rather than people she got on with (not explaining myself well, but I think introducing more characters did give the show more scope to show that they were people).

On first glance I thought the police lady was Liz May Brice, but last night I realised I'd got her confused with Kate Ashfield, AGAIN (Kate Ashfield was Shaun's girlfriend in Shaun of the Dead). I agree with you - I felt a bit sorry for her character seeing as everyone else seemed to be working out how to keep things from her - but she definitely didn't seem like a team leader. I wondered if she'd been promoted further than she should have so that if something went wrong she could be blamed, but I'm not sure that was the intention.
