Chainsaws, sirens, and dark debris-strewn streets filled with looters-- post-hurricane life bears a striking resemblance to Sin City! And you thought I wouldn’t notice...
It seems so long ago that we were actually in school, so it is going to take a stretch of imagination for you all to think back to that Friday when we came home and realized Monday was out, and we had to start putting shutters up. Wasn’t that a pleasant day? Much more pleasant than this one, I’d say, as I have designated it as Lab Day. If I don’t finish my lab by today, I’m going to chew my own hand off.
But I digress. Back to Friday! Once the madre and I exhausted all our rented movies-- The Interpreter, A Lot Like Love, and, in good hurricane spirit, The Day After Tomorrow-- life in storm took a dark turn. I spent most of my sad time:
1. chugging copious amounts of water: Get this: I’ve actually discovered a way to drink water from a bottle so that I never have to take the bottle from my mouth! I can just leave it up there and my mouth will never overflow. Using this method, I downed quite a few liters.
2. re-watching Gilmore Girls episodes back to back: I liked one, and I didn’t want to go too far ahead or I’d run out of Season 4 before Season 5 comes out December 13th, so I just watched the same one over again. In one sitting. It didn’t do much good-- later in the week when I got power back I just finished Season 4 anyway.
3. playing this Gilmore Girls game that’s in the special features of the DVD that tests your knowledge of the show, while my TV made weird buzzing noises: I was that bored. The buzzing noises were annoying, too.
4. literally waiting for people to sign on: I sat in front of the computer reading my book to make sure I didn’t miss anyone.
5. checking my e-mail every 5 minutes: You people should write me!
6. going to movies.com only to find that I’ve already seen all the trailers they have to offer me: Blast them!
7. playing Text Twist on Yahoo games: Except it gets old.
Of course, doing something mildly constructive, like homework or practicing, was COMPLETELY out of the question!
Oh, to have infinite expendable time...
Anyways, I thought I’d give you all a look at my Latest Obsessions:
1. Memoirs of a Geisha: Ho.my.god. I am SEEING that, whether someone will come with me or not. The madre says I can’t see it, though, unless I read the book first, so I have to haul ass and finish Cold Mountain already.
2. Conan o’Brien: I took a tour of NBC studios when I was in New York. It was a really interesting tour. I’ve never seen his show… ever… but I concluded that he is my new husband.
3. The Shins: Maybe I will invest in actually getting their CD so I can hear more than one song. Sha right! I’m cheap, remember?
4. Peter Sarsgaard: I saw Flightplan in New York, too (and The Wedding Date! And it was way cute, I don’t know why it got such bad reviews. I mean, obviously it’s not like, quality cinema, or something, but I thought it was good for what it was), and decided that I can easily look past his annoying squinty-eyed look because, well... *drool*
5. Sudokus!!!: The Word Search in the games section of Tropical Life of the Miami Herald recently got replaced with this number puzzle called a universal sudoku, and it is SO cool. I’m completely hooked.
So how did you all spend your hurricane days? Mine were actually quite pritty. It was a full five days or so of eating out, going to sleep early, waking up early when the sun rose, heading to the tennis courts to sit in the corner and read while I watched my parents try to play (oh yes-- they have discovered tennis… *facepalm*), sitting outside with friends eating barbecue and looking at stars...
Am I creating youthful memories? I hope so. I have yet to climb a tree and eat watermelon, or sneak out of my house (*snort* like I’ll ever do that) or do something crazy (*snort* again). I’ll let you know how it goes.
Okay, this entry is long enough; I’ll tell you ALL about my two, CONSECUTIVE fantastic weekends next time! (My god am I getting behind...)
(Oh, and hopefully I will at long last figure out how to import my birthday pictures, from over a month ago, but... sha. Right.)
