IC: Chief Medical Officer's personal and medical logs

ooc note: typos etc are intentional here, they stem from forced mind meld side effects and McCoy's concentration wandering because of it. Slightly more elaboration here

Chief Medical Officer's personal log. Stardate: 2267

-Performed bone reconstruction on Yeoman Clark's left hand until mid second shift. Extent of injuries listed in previous medical log (2267-Clark-K1), cause unknown.
-Received orders from Captain Kirk to transport to Kaleiyan surface to receive formal apologies from the Kaleiyan Empress personally. Supposedly that thing that injured Clark was her son.
Doctor M'Benga to take over surgery in the meantime.

I reported to the transporter room on schedule, where Mr. Scott made comment about the ion storm. I'm sure he'd have given me the exact storm grade, make up and just what every little effect it was having on the Enterprise if I'd let him. Shortly after, it appeared there was a malfunction with the transporter circuits or the board itself. I'm not an engineer. I appeared in what looked like a small, white patient room: certainly not what the files described as the type of architecture for a Kaleiyan. I immediately performed a preliminary check on myself, found nothing immediately wrong with me physically.

The damn thing will be the death of me.

Shortly after my arrival, a humanoid female escorted me to a cafeteria, where I encountered one Harvey Dent. (recent injuries, freshly bandaged, head wound? Humanoid male, late 30s-40s). Mr. Dent was generally abrasive, showed classic signs of paranoia and a temper and showed a deep-seated hostility towards medical staff. He was not outwardly violent at the time.

According to Mr. Dent, this is a medical facility, namely a mental institution. I know that I damn well haven't done a thing to merit medical care, much less an institution. Forgetting for a moment the 'nature' of my arrival, and assuming on some far-fetched possibility that I had cracked, there would still be paperwork. A diagnosis and a signature for those papers. If there's a constant to the universe, it'll be red tape and bureaucracy.

I confronted a nurse on the matter. The woman insisted that any questions I had were to go to my attending doctor. When I pressed her, she told me that a doctor hadn't been assigned to me yet. How in blazes am I supposed to see the paperwork if the blasted bureaucracy isn't even functioning?

I attempted to find out which Starbase this was, using the post board. A person claiming to be Mr. Chekov answered and claimed he was familiar with Starfleet. I replied back, telling him it was a punishable offense to impersonate a Starfleet officer. He followed through with his full rank and authorization code and ship he was assigned to. At the time, I assumed it was someone impersonating the ensign, but I removed the paper with the code all the same.

My room number is M41. The doors are locked, I was unable to open it from the inside. I located my uniform while searching the room. For some reason or other, only I kept mine, while my roommate's remains confiscated. My roommate is a 'Commander Hayes'. (Humanoid male, 40s) He was level-headed, displayed a larger than usual appetite, but was sociable and pleasant.

Unlike Mr. Dent, he's aware of the existence of other planets and space travel, so at least I'm not in any danger of violating the Prime Directive around him. However, he claims to have come from a place where Earth was conquered and enslaved. If it weren't for last week's incident (see medical log: 2267-LM328-1A), I wouldn't have believed him. He also told me that another patient had claimed that there were monsters and brainwashing at night. True to his source's word, the doors did unlock later. I accompanied Commander Hayes out of the room, where we found other patients milling about, with no sign of any staff or security. I can't think of a single hospital where any sane doctor would let patients roam around like this. Whoever's running this place is a damn fool.

We reached the end of the hall when I encountered the impossible, namely seeing Spock and Chekov barreling right down it. They were inexplicably younger than the Spock and Chekov I know back home, but I'll be damned if I can't pick those pointed ears out of a crowded room. I've spent too long arguing the man into a corner not to. At the time, I came to the conclusion that the entire experience was the result of brain trauma from the transporter accident, and that I was hallucinating. 'Spock' didn't recognize me immediately, but insisted that I come with him to find Kirk. Despite my better judgment, I decided to humor the suggestion.

Kirk was located outside the building being attacked by the native fauna of this planet. Spock distracted it while Chekov retrieved him. Like Mr. Spock and the ensign, Jim looked about ten years younger. He believed himself to be a man named "William Shatner" and that we were all a figment of his imagination. I can't say I've ever had a figment tell me I was a figment.

[See following medical log for details on condition]

[Medical Log 2267-JTK001-1A), Stardate: 2267.???
Received patient with a number of abrasions and scrapes to palms and forearms. Four gouge marks going from his right deltoid to his left pectoral. Substantial blood loss, not immediately life threatening.

Patient showed signs of disorientation and delusion, possibly from head wound from creature. I checked for a concussion. No sign of bumps. He responded well to light test, although he failed answering questions regarding his name, location and what happened. Patient became increasingly uncooperative and belligerent. He claimed to be a 'William Shatner", and while he called us by name, he did not appear to recognize us as his crew.

I was unable to treat Kirk's wounds before we were all knocked out. (remotely?) I came to to find it morning and that I was back in my room. Not so certain anymore that this is all result of trauma from transporter accident. Got a bad feeling about this. Could be another universe? (or they came from one) Last time had a transporter accident and storm involved too.

Ran into Jim at breakfast. he Showed significant improvement, seemed to recognize me. Had deja vu back to when I first met the captain I knew, looked about the same except for eye color. this one didn't give mE nearly the same lip. He says Spock thinks this is some kinda training program, asked what I thought. Told him this could be an alien we've never encountered before and that I thought it was more along the lines of an experiment.

Found Mr. Chekov. Dressed him down, told him to leave doctoring to the doctors. Gave him back the paper where he slipped his authorization code. At that rate, anyone could have gained access to command of ship operations.

[Medical Log 2267-JTK002-1B), Stardate: 2267.???

[examiner note: As I don't have a single piece of medical equipment on hand at the moment, most of the values are eyeballed and therefore not 100% accurate, log will be incomplete. - LM)

Patient's Name: James Tiberius Kirk
Rank: Captain
Height: 6" - 6 2"
Weight: 160-165 pounds
(could stand to gain a lb or two - keep an eye on eating habits)
Date of Intake: Stardate: 2267.???
Attending Physician: Leonard McCoy, M.D. Chief Medical Officer

Physical state:

Diet - may not be eating enough (or healthily). Recommend monitoring diet over course of next three days.

Heart rate: 70 BPM, Patient's minimum systolic value is well within acceptable range. Respiratory rate seems healthy, strong lung capacity, no signs of crepitations or dyspnea. Unable to take body temperature at this time.

Investigation of wound to upper torso shows an accelerated healing rate. Abnormal wound repair rate. The deep gouge marks going from right deltoid to left pectoral closed with set of primitive stitches and sutures, advanced scabbing. Surrounding epidermal tissue still showing faint signs of bruising. If I didn't know better, I'd have assumed this was weeks ago. No sign of infection. Patient was unable to provide me additional information when I asked who was responsible for the stitches.

No treatment necessary at this time.

Mental health:

Patient's overall mood is relatively euthymic. Speech is clear and well articulated. No abnormalities of activity. Steady eye contact. Patient is cooperative, rapport is within a comfortable range. Appears lucid and fully aware of where he is and who he is. Mild unexplained outburst earlier however: directed more at self than the examiner.

[note in margin: ZEX, 40s, blonde hair w/ hint of green, partially shaved with scar. Left eye w/ bandage over it. Track down later]

Patient explained his experience the day prior as follows: "I know everything that happened yesterday. I know it was me, even if I thought I was someone else at the time. When I [patient corrects self] when he woke up that morning, he remembered everything I'd gone through, but he thought most of it was a hallucination. He believed he'd been delusional for weeks, and had only snapped out of it right then. And he was so sure of himself. No matter what anyone said, he knew he wasn't James T. Kirk."

Patient added: "I feel the same way about his memories. In a lot of ways, they were familiar: his brother looked like my brother, and his mother looked like mine, and his father...this memories feel different in my head. Fake. I mean, I really don't think we're in any danger of having Bill pop back up."

Patient referred to this "other life" as a separate and complete entity named 'Bill'. See Log JTK001-1A: full name of other personality - 'William Shatner'.

[hastily scrawled note on the side: A neural neutralizer? May need counseling]

Examiner: "You acted like you recognized us.... what kind of person did you think you were?"

-Patient showing signs of nervousness, anxiety, rubbing at bandages, got up and started pacing room.

Patient: "Me. Or a twenty-first-century version of me, anyway. So no Starfleet, no Narada, [side note: "Narada?"] no sentient races aside from humans... but otherwise, the Iowan farmboy you all know and love."

Patient: "William Shatner was a construct.....but whoever created his memories knew way too much about me, about my life. It's like they cracked my head open and changed all the names around. I recognized Spock because Bill knew a guy who looked and acted just like him, except his name was Aidan. And he knew you. Or... he knew the other you, the one who's like you in every way."

Patient ".... the Doctor McCoy from my reality. He had a different name too, but I - Bill - still called him Bones. However, I didn't know Chekov because Bill's memories stopped right after the disciplinary hearing. Apparently, the board chose to expel him, this caused him to have a mental breakdown, and he... turned into me. Captain Kirk."

Examiner: "Have you been experiencing any flashbacks, or anything of the sort, since morning?"

--Patient trying to avoid issue, claims it depends on how you defined flashbacks. Claims that while he retained "Bill"'s memories, he knows who he is.
--Patient is becoming increasingly agitated and uninformative when pressed about possible side effects and and further details about his experience.
