The darkness begins setting and the midnight oil burns.
The heat lightning is flashing igniting the sleeping world
and all I see are visions of a child on the stairs,
A still face lit by sirens holding back all of the tears.
But the rush of paramedics leaves a stone stuck in your throat
Racing off to mend a broken, brittle heart.
It's storming now; I'm stuck here all alone.
There's shuffling in the streets, the trees swaying to sleep
Seconds hands in motion turning in fluid sweeps.
But stability can't greet me until the pressure's been released
The chemicals and low blood cells that kept us on our feet.
Well wishers are gamblers betting pennies on the moods
Should we offer them some laughter or sign condolences?
Her words are only memories conclusions never spoke
And directions were just offered as the morals in the jokes.
What paths will lead these legs to water?
How will our horses draw a drink?
Don't let the sun descend the ocean
Or this island might just sink.
It's a tidal wave or the words to save a son losing his mind.
It's all the dreams we spoke about, all the mysteries of time.
And the sand still fills the hourglass running paralleled with mine.
You taught me not to take the short cuts, to keep one toe pressed to the line.
Don't fall apart like every other broken heart,
Don't lay in shards of shattered sand and glass.
