City Date: June 1, 2009
It has been nearly a week since I arrived in this ‘nexus dimension’-a fitting term. I noted to Commander Spock that, while many languages are spoken here (Japanese and English remain the most prevalent thus far), the language barrier does not pose a problem. The only explanation that I can think of, in the absence of a universal translator, is that the City itself translates for the citizens-unless one consciously chooses to speak one’s native tongue, or any other language one is proficient in. I will continue to observe and report my findings.
As per the Captain’s suggestion, I’ve secured a job in the City library. To put it bluntly, I’d have to stay there around the clock if I wanted to make a sizable dent in the stacks-there are hundreds, and as to the number of volumes…millions is not an exaggeration. Also, the way materials are organized could use a little help. Everything seems to be in flux.
Regardless, I have never backed down from a challenge, and I don’t plan to start now.
There’s an old saying, ‘Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.’ And while I’m not necessarily trying to flatter you, Dr. McCoy, I think you had the right idea when you introduced yourself properly to the City at large. But observe the differences in tone. I’m not as surly as you are.
Hello, everyone. I am Lieutenant Uhura, the communications officer aboard the USS Enterprise. In the City, however, I’ll be working at the Library-one of the most expansive institutions I’ve ever seen, I might add. I can understand why a person would feel overwhelmed in there.
Now then, I don’t often ask for favors, and this isn’t a favor so much as an opportunity-my specialization is xenolingustics, and I’d like to have a comprehensive picture of the citizens from that standpoint, if you would indulge me:
Name:Place of origin:Species:Native language:Any additional languages spoken: Thank you.
