Young John Frusciante from '88-'92......so SO sexy. The idea of him and River Phoenix together - they were friends - is possibly the coolest thing I could ever imagine (yes I'm being geeked here). I'm sure there are pictures/videos of them together out there, in private collections. I wish someone would make at least one of them public. John wrote the best song about River out of all the songs written about River, called "Smile From The Streets You Hold". Not only did he actually know River, so that makes the song more meaningful, but the music really captures River's spirit which I don't think any of the other songs written about him do as well. There are moments of "Transcending" that are nice but overall that song doesn't totally work (I don't like the angry tone it takes towards the end about the media, I wished they'd just focused on River). John's solo stuff is amazing, especially Niandra Lades and Usually Just a T-shirt. He exists in this really interesting space as a solo artist. The fickle indie rock fans want nothing to do with him because he's the guitarist for The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and a lot of Chili Peppers fans are so mainstream that his solo stuff is too different for them, so he gets this great, truly "alternative" space to exist in, full of people not ruled by the thought police. It's great.
