Rock Star: INXS

I'm surprised... two of my bottom three actually made the bottom three!

I liked the extra footage from the mansion. I hope that trend continues. I don't like the drama that's being forced into it. Suzie's tearful plea for an original last week and J.D.'s confrontation tonight... it makes for better TV, but it's even more forced than Brooke Burke's smile.

I also liked the dual encore. Marty was much more animated during this performance, and it made for an even better performance (even if the choir still needs to be taken out back and beaten). Suzie... no different opinions on her encore.

I noticed something through all three elimination performances (though less in the first one, because I'm not as familiar with that song). Did the house band sound off to anyone else, or was it just me?

J.D. - This Time: I liked his voice. I think it nestled right into the INXS song, and made itself a cozy little home. That said, it was a strangely empty performance in every other regard. The house band played it a bit low, and not as brightly as it should have been. On the flipside, it fit J.D.'s voice pretty well. I'm not sure if that was concious choice on his part, but it worked either way.

Ty - The One Thing: Garry Gary made a big deal over him missing one word in the chorus, so you could see that INXS wasn't completely in his corner. The house band was still off, but this song is very stong on synth and the house band is very guitar driven. This is the first time I've noticed Ty struggling with breath control. Maybe that was nerves, but it showed.

Jordis - Listen Like Thieves: INXS handicapped her with this song choice. Like "What You Need," this is purely Michael Hutchence. The house band was still off... they were very subdued on a song that needed them to drive. Jordis' voice doesn't really suit her voice; the song is really dark and her voice is a little too sunny. I think she forgot about the end of the bridge (where she dropped her head on a line that SHOULD HAVE BEEN SUNG TO THE CAMERA, or at least the audience. I was torn about her elaborations (read: vocal gymnastics) on the final chorus. In my opinion, there was a little too much Jordis and not enough INXS.

Given the three people performing, the results weren't surprising. Of the three, only Ty had been in the bottom three before. It didn't help that his performance was crap (although the others weren't much better). When I started watching, I was sure that Ty would be one of the final two. As the weeks progressed, I still saw him making the final four. I thought his elimination performance last week would send him home, but INXS gave him another chance. Failing to shine on two straight INXS performances cost him here.

Ty will make amazing music. I really hope he discovers who he is and makes the music he has inside.

And, because I can't let this go, it really pisses me off that he called the voters racist in his exit monologue. Like it or not, for every voter who votes 20 times on the strength of the performance, there are two who vote 20 times for their favorite. When you get to this point in the competition, YOU HAVE TO DELIVER THE PERFORMANCE EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. You didn't, and your fan club didn't vote the extra times to keep you out of the bottom three. I still haven't forgiven you for "Heartbreaker," or "Proud Mary," and while I liked your performance of "You Can't Always Get What You Want," you didn't win everyone over. You blew your shot at redemption, and now you're free to sign a better record deal.

Besides, even if winning the INXS gig was really your desired outcome, they've got one album, then a series of greatest hits tours. Does anyone actually see INXS regaining the popularity they had in 1987-1990? Look at the hip-hop dominated charts today before you answer. Most popular albums: Kanye West, Mariah Carey, 50 Cent, Young Jeezy, Green Day, Missy Elliott, System of a Down, Coldplay, Pretty Ricky, Boyz N da Hood... how does INXS fit on that list? More to the point, how does Ty Taylor fit on that list?

Opinions welcome.
