☓ Personality: Yosuke is a pretty easy going guy, a normal teenage high school student. He is nice, friendly, outgoing, clumsy at times, has a good heart and looks out for his friends. He is willing to go out of his way for those he cares about, especially his friends. He has a hero complex which tends to have him self-insert into situations that does not directly have to do with him. But even though he wants something more exciting in his life (thus the hero complex) that does not mean he is doing it just for self-satisfaction.
But in turn, he is the type of person who can be your best friend or your worst enemy. Pushing him over the edge of past his limits is not something anyone wants to witness. His ‘anger management issues’ are pretty much kept unwraps. He tends not to think things through, thus causing him to make rash decisions (like throwing someone into the TV which essentially is murder). Not to mention that is becomes a pretty scary person when angry, even making someone like Chie cower back a bit.
If someone has it better than him, he can become slightly jealous even though Yosuke will rarely admit/say it out loud. This makes him more of the passive aggressive type when dealing with situations. Only under the condition that someone is close to him, he’ll actually come out and say how he feels about the person….or if he’s in some sort of blind rage. Ironically, even though he is passive aggressive about how he feels towards others, he is the type that would rather someone say something to his face if they have a problem. Pretty backwards huh?
He does not like to take things too seriously unless it's a situation that affects him directly. He is seen as the comic relief in the series (although he does not make bad jokes and puns like Teddie). But it is because he is carefree (or at least tries to be) and lax. But all the rules go out the window if it is a topic or issue close to him. Then the comedy disappears and he can become the most serious member on the investigation team.
EVERYTHING PAST THIS POINT IS THE EXPANSION
When Yosuke is first met in the game, his clumsy side is shown considering he is rolling around in a trash can. From there, he is friendly and seeing how he interacts with his other classmates are shown. He is friends with Chie and Yukiko (although Yukiko comes off more of a friend of a friend). Yosuke kind of grins and bears it when he is forced to do something he does not want to do, like treat everyone to food just because he broke Chie’s DVD. That is a display of his passive aggressiveness.
As the game goes on, more of Yosuke’s personality is shown. For example, he is seen as talkative, outgoing, and becomes the best friend type. That does not change until he meets Kanji Tatsumi. Yosuke displays homophobia, believing that Kanji is interested in men, especially Naoto Shirogane. It is when they are trying to figure out who the killer is that Yosuke is ‘forced’ to interact with Kanji and comes up with assumption. It is shown more when Yosuke, Kanji, and Souji share the same tent during the school trip. Yosuke, while he does not completely mind being friends with Kanji (okay he does), he does not want to be near him. After the misunderstanding of who Naoto is, things tend to ease up and Yosuke does not say much about Kanji and his ‘tendencies’ anymore.
In leveling up his social link, Souji sees a side of Yosuke that no one in the group sees. He sees that Yosuke is selfish, self-centered, does things for his own satisfaction, holds a lot inside, and is actually slightly emotional. The more self-centered and selfish side comes out when Yosuke has to deal with his hero complex. He would become highly passive aggressive towards Souji, saying nothing is wrong when clearly there is a problem. And when he finally musters up the courage, instead of just talking things out, he wants Souji to hit him. Why? Because he has been a jerk to him and he feels that is the only way to get even for his past mistakes. But they brawl it out and their friendship becomes closer than ever.
The emotional side of Yosuke comes out when he finds pictures of him and Saki and it just reminds him that he was not able to save her. And it is for the first time that he admits that it actually upset him that people saw him as the enemy because of Junes. But it is because of Saki that he was able to come to terms with it and comforted him through the ordeal. And even if her words were not true, it did not matter to Yosuke, it still meant a lot to him. Losing her was a big impact that he had trouble getting over. And it was the first time that Yosuke opened up to anyone else about Saki’s death really effected him.
Yosuke has the potential to be a ticking time bomb. When Nanako is hospitalized and passes on, Yosuke’s emotional grief actually turns into rage. Perhaps it could even be far worst than Kanji. When the members believe that Namatame is behind the TV world and throwing people into the TV, Yosuke has no second sounds about taken Namatame’s life. Not because of Nanako’s death, but also because of Saki, Yosuke’s coworker and long time crush/love interest. In a nutshell, he would rather solve death, with death as a means of revenge. Even in the bad ending where everyone agrees to throw Namatame into the TV, he apologizes to Nanako that even though they ‘avenged’ her, she would not be happy with the end result.
Down the true ending path and the investigation team finally figure out who the murderer is and why things still are not ‘right’ with Inaba, Yosuke becomes more determined than ever to put an end to what has been going on. And in the end, when everything is solved and everything is said and done, he is able to send off Souji with a smile and never forget their friendship because he was able to change because he had a friend by his side.
