"You shouldn't have told him you want to be a nurse."
Peter hisses as his fingers hit a particularly tender spot, just a little beyond the outer corner of his eye and pretends like he doesn't hear Nathan's patronizing tone. The bruise starting to form on his face, shading his eye and the surrounding area a lovely shade of blue, purple, and black, is more much attention grabbing.
This'll be fun and a half explaining to his friends where it came from without telling them the whole truth of the matter.
"What was I supposed to to do?" he asks after a minute of silence and only because Nathan's still standing there in the doorway of the bathroom. "Lie to him?"
"It would've been smart, yeah," Nathan retorts.
Peter pauses, glares at his brother in the mirror, and then turns his attention back to his new beautiful black eye. "It would've been a lie," he states.
"Move over," Nathan orders, leaving his post by the door and grabbing Peter by the shoulders so they face each other. He waves his little brother's hands away and starts to inspect the bruise himself. "I'm just saying next time--hold still!--you decide to share news with the family, maybe you should consider lying, for the sake of your eye."
Peter sighs and has to force himself to resist the urge to fidget because Nathan's pressing too hard in all the wrong places. "Bad as it looks?" he asks.
"Oh yeah," Nathan says with a small laugh. "Dad's got a nasty temper."
"And apparently a hatred for male nurses," Peter quips.
"Just ones that are his sons," Nathan shrugs. "'Lawyer or nothing', little brother."
"I'm not lawyer material."
"I know that," Nathan turns and opens the medicine cabinet in search of a washcloth to wet with cold water and press against Peter's injured eye until they can find him something a bit more icy. He hesitates and grabs the bottle of aspirin as an afterthought. "You'd be an awful lawyer," he says simply, handing the bottle to Peter who obediently opens it and downs two pills in the blink of an eye while Nathan gets the tap water as cold as it'll go. "But that's who you are, Peter. You take care of people, not put them in jail."
Peter half smiles and accepts the cool washcloth with a nod of thanks. "Just kinda wish Dad would understand that. You and Mom do."
Nathan places a hand on his baby brother's shoulders and gives him one of his best smiles, the kind he saves for clients that are complete lost causes but he doesn't want them to know it because that's money lost if they realize their hopelessness. "I'm sure he will by your graduation."
