“Lyle!” Sandra Bennet called up the stairs. “Will you and your sister get y our behinds down here?! Your waffles are getting cold!”

Lyle stood in front of his bedroom mirror, not moving. The Bennets had moved from Odessa to Costa Verde in hiding, to keep Claire safe, to keep her away from the men who their father had worked for. They were supposed to be safe, able to live normal lives, but for the first time, Lyle wished that he wasn’t normal. He wished he was special. He wished he could do something amazing, like Claire.

Lyle didn’t want to be able to stick his hand into a pot of boiling water and pull it out without a burn. He didn’t want to be able to jump off a 30 story building and come up without a scratch. He didn’t even want to be able to reattach severed limbs. He wanted to do something different, something special, something that would get him noticed. He wanted to do something that would warrant more attention from his family. He wished he had an ability that would make his mother proud and would have his father doing anything in his power to protect him. For once in his life, Lyle wanted to feel more important than his sister.

“Lyle! Waffles!”

His reflection in the mirror never changed. He didn’t really expect it to. He was still the same kid he always was, unspecial. It was silly to wish for anything more, but he couldn’t help himself. He only wanted to stand out in the sea of conformity.

“Lyle!”

For now, he would just have to settle for waffles.
