"I should have known all along what I was getting dragged into," Simone sat on the edge of her seat, leaning forward, elbows resting on her thighs. "I guess... in a way I did."

"It's because you love him," Peter stood before her. "You would have done anything for him. And I know you tried."

"So many times that I lost count." Simone shifted. "The drugs... I think he's finally lost his mind. Thinking he can paint the future." She attempted a soft laugh through her nervous tears. "Paint the future. Nobody can paint the future." She watched the doctors hurrying in and out of the ER.

Peter took a seat beside her, resting his hand gently atop hers. He wasn't sure what would happen to Isaac. Peter had seen overdoses before. He had seen people survive, he had seen them die. Isaac was in so deep that Peter wasn't sure if he would pull through it.

"What else could I have done?" Simone asked. "There has to have been something. Maybe I should have believed him. Maybe I could have been around more or..."

"Hey..." Peter turned his body to face her, still holding her hands gently. "You did everything you could. You couldn't force him to stop using."

"I could have tried."

"You were there everyday. You asked him to stop, right?"

Simone nodded.

"Those drugs... they take a hold and they eat away at you. It's not easy to stop, Simone."

Simone sighed softly, wiped her eyes. "I can't do this anymore," she said. "It might sound cold and cruel, but I can't deal with Isaac's using anymore. He may have finally done it this time, killed himself and if he pulls through, I can't watch him do this to himself again. I need something stable." She paused to take a breath. "I need a relationship where I don't have to constantly look over my shoulder, where I don't have to question trust. I need a good guy who is reliable and who cares about me enough not to poison himself."

"You're an amazing person, Simone," Peter told her. "You have a huge heart. You care about people, you..."

"Why can't it be you?" Simone interrupted.

"Why can't... what be me?"

"Why can't you be the one? The guy who comes in and makes it all OK? It should be you, Peter. I want it to be you."

"Simone I'm flattered," Peter said. "But I... I have my baggage too. I don't know if I'm the person you're looking for."

"It is you, Peter," she said. "It was you all along. I saw it the first moment you walked into my father's building. You gave of yourself. Always gave and never wanted anything in return."

"You're emotional, Simone."

"No," she said. "I just came to a realization that I should have been with you all along." Simone studied his reaction. "Don't lie, Peter. You know it's true. You feel it too."

"I think we should wait to see what happens here," Peter said. "There's plenty of time for you to think about everything. Let's just take it one step at a time, OK?"

Peter smiled as Simone nodded. The doctors were coming out to give them news on Isaac. He would never admit it now, but Peter agreed with everything Simone had said. He loved her. He was the one she belonged with, not Isaac. Peter had never been a possessive person. He had never been a fighter. But for Simone, he was prepared to fight and he would win at all costs.
