Disclaimer: I do not own the Petrelli Brothers, and I’m getting zero for writing this.
Author's Notes: Unbetaed. Plus I am half asleep but I have been sitting on this for days and I had to get it out. So if it reads like I was half dead when I wrote it...that's because I was.
He wished he had gone with his original idea to get Peter some help, but his previous suggestions had not faired so well either. He had suggested that Peter take the rest of the semester off to get himself back together, but that only resulted in Peter having nothing to do all day but wallow. He wished he knew what to do. In any other situation he would have, but what did you say to someone that had been violated in such a horrible way?
He’d handled rape cases in court, even then with the victims it was touch and go. He wasn’t a rape counselor; he had no idea where to begin. Nathan sighed and shifted against the door frame. Watching Peter toss and turn, trapped in a fitful sleep, it was gut-wrenching. He longed for the days where he could make all of Peter’s troubles disappear with a few words or a hug. He walked over and sat on the edge of the bed, rubbing Peter’s forehead like he did when Peter was little, hoping that somewhere in there Peter sensed him and sensed safety.

Anything resembling sleep had fled from him a long time ago. It actually seemed better not sleeping at all. Sleep meant dreaming, and dreaming meant submitting to his violation over and over again. Most nights if he dozed off, he would wake up screaming; arms flailing; legs kicking, sweat pouring off his body, soaking though his clothes. Peter relived that night in his mind so many times he felt stuck there with no hope of escape. Trapped in a world where Adam could do whatever he pleased. Trapped in a world where no matter how fast he runs Adam always catches him and violates him in every depraved way imaginable.
His life had become a mere fraction of what it had been. Peter was thankful he had his own apartment, so he was able to avoid questions from the rest of the family. It had been a week since the attack and no doubt his parents, as well as Heidi and his nephews had to wonder why they hadn’t seen him around.
The other constant was Nathan. He would be there, holding him, comforting him, chasing the bad dreams away for the time being. Peter smiled to himself at the thought; big brother to the rescue as always.

“Did you have something to do with this?” Peter tossed the morning paper on Nathan’s desk. Nathan glanced at it and sighed. There was a picture of Adam Monroe and the headlined called him a beloved teacher. Nathan almost scoffed at the title.
“Looks like you’re not the only one your teacher pissed off.”
“Nathan I’m serious. Did you have him killed?”
“Peter I’m honestly offended that you would assume our family has the connections to have someone “whacked”, Nathan said. “Not all Italians are connected to the mob.”
“Don’t play me Nathan. I’m not just some unknowledgeable schmo. I know you and I know how you react to things. Did you have him killed?
“What if I did?” Nathan’s question caught him off guard. Part of Peter was thankful that Adam was dead, but that part was quickly pushed aside by guilt.
“How could you do that?” Peter turned away, sitting down on the plush couch across the room. Nathan stood and walked over to him. He stared at Peter for a few minutes; Peter refused to meet his eyes. “I shouldn’t have told you what happened.”
Nathan launched forward and grabbed Peter’s wrist. Peter tied to pull back but Nathan grabbed him by the collar and dragged him to his feet. Peter whimpered when Nathan slammed him up against the wall.
“Don’t you dare do that! Don’t you dare internalize this and make it your fault! He got what he deserved! You think you’re the only one hurting in all this? You think I’m okay with listening to you cry out in your sleep because of what he did to you? You think I’m okay with seeing how tense you get when me or anybody else gets within five feet of you?” Nathan tightened his grip. “Look at you right now. You can’t even stand the fact that I’m touching you.”
“I’ve-“
“You feel guilty because he’s dead and deep down you know I had something to do with it, you knew that before you asked me. He deserved it Peter. He hurt you and I made him pay.” Nathan traced his fingers over the bruises around Peter’s neck. “He did this to you and I had to make him suffer. I had a right to make him suffer.”
Peter averted his gaze, choosing the floor as his focus instead.
Nathan cupped Peter’s face; making their eyes meet. “Tell me you weren’t happy when you found out he was dead. Tell me you weren’t relieved that the bastard got what was coming to him.” He needed to hear that Peter was okay with what he had done. He felt justified enough but Peter’s compliance would make it sound.
“I-“
“Don’t lie to me Peter. What was the first thing you felt when you found out someone put a bullet in him?”
“I was happy ! I was happy he was dead, then I realized you did it. For a minute it didn’t matter because he was dead and he could never hurt me again and I was so relieved.” Tears slipped unbidden down Peter’s cheeks and onto Nathan’s hands. Nathan released Peter’s shirt and backed away when he realized that Peter was trembling under his hold. He pulled Peter to him, held him tight for a few minutes then they broke apart.
“I love you Pete.”
“I love you too, Nathan.”
Nathan straightened his tie as if that was his method of switching off those pesky emotions. “If the police contact you, you don’t lie to them. You tell them that you went to his house for tutoring and that was the last time you saw him.” Nathan handed Peter a tissue.
Peter slung his bag over his shoulder; taking the offered tissue to make sure he looked presentable. The brothers shared one more look before Peter made way to the door. Before he opened it, Peter stopped and turned. “Did he suffer, Nathan?”
“Not enough Pete. Not enough.”
The End
