Running Away & Apologies
by Catie Paige
She had run away from Micah, she had run away from D.L. Her legs were burning and she thought her skull might have been cracking in half with all the trouble it was taking to keep Jessica at bay long enough to get away.
“I can’t be trusted. We can’t be trusted.” Was her mantra and for now it was her truth. She wasn’t safe for anyone to be around. She thought about turning herself into the police for Jessica’s crimes but as soon as she let her guard down they would have an out of control monster on their hands. So she ran.
Then she collapsed, falling face over foot as the sky blurred into the ground and direction lost definition. When she stopped she was face first in leaves and was pretty sure that the gritty texture in her mouth was either dirt or a shattered tooth. When she rolled over she screamed out as it became painfully obvious that her arm was out of socket.
Another scream as she tried to jerk her arm back into place, and failed and she would fail once more. Finally she broke down; tears and words that were no where near understandable.
“Damn it! If she’s strong enough, so am I. I deserve this!” she yelled into the trees as she successfully put her shoulder back into place.
She heard the sound of something cutting through air and then the soft thud of something landing and shortly after that there were footsteps. She crawled off behind a tree large enough that she could sit behind it. She saw feet come towards her; they were wearing nurse shoes and seemed to be lightly splashed with blood.
“Who are you?” she asked in a scared voice which was originally intended to be strong or intimidating. More failure.
Peter Petrelli stood still, caught off guard by a voice he hadn’t expected to hear. He took a few more steps forward and tried to think of a woman who Nathan could have had follow him. He came up blank.
“Peter Petrelli… who are you?” his answer was followed by a question as he took another step forward.
She’d read something about a Petrelli, something about Petrelli and Linderman. Had Linderman mentioned a Petrelli? Whose memory was this, her own or Jessica’s?
“Did Linderman send you down here?’ Her voice was cautious as her muscles tensed. If he confirmed her fear she didn’t think Jessica would stay at bay.
“Why would Linderman send someone for you? Who are you?” Peter said without answering her questions. He was a little annoyed he was hearing about Linderman yet again, a little grateful it wasn’t from his brother’s mouth.
She had convinced herself that from the sound of the Peter’s voice she was hearing he couldn’t be too threatening. She stood up and out of the cover the tree provided her.
“I’m Niki. Let’s just say that I happen to be very unlucky in life.” her voice had grown more confident upon seeing that Peter actually wasn’t too dangerous looking… of course there was the blood on his shirt and in his hair. Then again she knew better than anyone that just because you were covered in blood didn’t mean you were a killer or even capable of killing.
Peter smiled as he noticed Niki eying his shirt, “The blood’s mine, I sort of took a fall.” He paused a moment and suddenly realized how tired he was. He felt a little sick, he was sure it was nothing though.
“Took of fall? Sort of?” she chuckled. “If you were a woman I’d say you sounded abused, like a victim.” She said as her voice softened slightly out of habit in response to the tired look that came over Peter.
“Just the opposite, I saved a cheer leader. I may have saved the world.” He said as he leant against a near tree, he felt suddenly weaker. He looked to the ground and wondered whether his vision was starting to blur.
“How does saving a cheer leader save the world?” she said with a look that she was unaware Peter received quite often from anyone he told his theories to. A look that told him he might be crazy and was most likely delusional or desperate.
“You know, my family asks me that question enough. I don’t need some strange unlucky woman asking me the same thing. If Nathan does no more than tell me that I can’t and that I’m not capable I don’t know why I expect anyone else to think different.” His voice would have conveyed his anger more had he been able to find the strength. He was so hot, he was on fire inside or he would be soon. He felt like… like a bomb.
It took a second for it all to click but she had a vague idea of the Nathan he was talking about. Nathan Petrelli. A senator who Linderman… who Jessica had gotten her involved with on a highly adulterous level. Peter’s face held fatigue with a side of anger and as his voice faded the mother in Niki filled with worry.
“Peter, are you okay?” she said as she rushed over to him. His knees seemed to buckle and he was soon sitting on the ground against the tree.
Peter was seeing double and felt worse than he had ever felt after a night of drinking. He saw Niki kneel before him, felt her touch his skin and then heard her say that he felt like he was on fire. He could only smile at the fact that he was thinking the same thing just a moment earlier.
“I just wish he wouldn’t doubt me all the time. It’d be nice to get all the support from him that I give to him. Instead I’m just a weak little brother he sees as a campaign liability.” He went on saying, he felt like he was dying and still he could only hope for Nathan’s approval.
“I know how you feel,” she sat next to Peter and he leant against her, “I have a… a sister… Jessica. She thinks I’m too weak. She’s been doing a lot of bad things and she’s out of control and every time I try to do the right thing she second guesses me. She always says that I can’t control my life anymore that I’m not strong enough or good enough. That it’s her turn to make things right.” She rested her head atop Peter’s which rested on her shoulder.
“You’re really warm, Peter. I don’t think this is normal.” She made him sit up and noticed that her shoulder looked sun burnt. “Something is wrong…”
“Call Nathan.” He said as his eyelids grew heavy.
“Peter, you need a doctor…” she tried to convince him but he interrupted.
“Tell him I’m sorry, it isn’t my fault. I think that I’m the explosion but I can’t help it. It’s not my fault. I was supposed to save lives. I was supposed to save the world. It’s not my fault.” His voiced faded and he slumped over, his eyes were still open but only barely.
“Peter…” she gasped as she reached into her pocket for her phone. Well, for Jessica’s phone. She was relieved to find Nathan’s number and not so relieved to see it categorized under “Target”.
“Hello? Nathan...? Yeah, I have two forms of bad news…” she said as she tried to keep Peter awake.
