I had a very vivid, kinda freaky dream last night.
I don't remember how it started; it was one of those dreams where one thing kind of melts into another and it goes on and on. The first part of it I remember (other than the random avoiding of a female gym teacher in a pantsuit) is playing cross-country golf with an asian kid (I think it was Annyang from Arrested Development). Actually, he was playing and I was his caddy/spotter guy. He'd hit the ball, and I'd try to keep an eye on where it went (it was an orange golf ball, so it was a bit easier). Annyang hit the ball into the courtyard of a hotel, and as we were walking to it, we passed a Chinese guy. And the Chinese guy thought, "My long-lost identical twin brothers! We look exactly alike!"
(First, yeah, I heard what he was thinking. Second, I know he meant triplets, but I pretty sure he thought "twin" in my dream. Third, even in the dream it seemed really stupid as none of us looked anything alike, especially as Annyang was a fair bit younger than either of us.)
In any case, we found Annyang's ball, and he teed it up (which you're not supposed to do in real golf, but apparently it's perfectly fine in the weird cross-country golf we were playing). He took a couple of ridiculously wild swings at it (complete with the trying to see where the ball went when he hadn't hit it at all gag). I gave him some zen-like advice (no, I don't remember what it is now) and he calmed down some. He hit a rather nice shot but it got bogged down in some tree branches and wound up landing next to a house across the street. As Annyang was spotting his ball away from the side of the house, I looked around.
The house was at the edge of a very large, open field. The sky was cloudy, full of dark, roiling clouds, without a scrap of bare sky between them. And there was a gigantic flock of birds flying past us.
It took me a second to realize the birds were vultures. Easily a hundred vultures, probably more. I pointed them out to Annyang as they landed in the field just up the street from us. I remember thinking (or saying) that they were probably there for all the corpses (which may have been in reference to something earlier in the dream, it didn't feel like a total non sequitor). And then, the vultures started picking up cows. Five or six vultures to each cow, picking them up alive and carrying them off. I could see the cows' eyes, looking at me in utter terror (no pun intended).
As I followed the vultures flight path parallel to us, Annyang said something getting my attention. I looked and saw that the vultures were now picking up whole train cars full of cows (the train tracks had apparently replaced the road). Little flocks of vultures carrying whole rail cars, opening the doors, cows spilling out, falling to the ground.
I followed the vultures' flight and, on the other side of us from where they'd picked up the cows, there was a highway, which went over a large bridge. I saw some of the vultures attempt to pick up one of those car-carrying trailers. I never saw whether they actually got it up, because a much larger group of the vultures then started picking up the bridge.
Cars began plunging through the gaps in the street, falling out of sight. The bridge itself began to break up and I could see cars trying to stay on tiny spans of bridge no bigger than their cars, slipping off one end or another, and falling into oblivion. On either side of the precipice, cars began hitting the brakes, crashing into one another, getting shoved over the edge by the cars behind them.
I remember one car in particular. It was a little bitty car, with a large, round sign on the side that read, "We Trust Senior Funds." It braked too late, crashing into the car in front of it. Then the car behind it hit it. As more and more cars crashed and collided, the cars on either side smashed it, crushing it until nothing was left. And I remember thinking that the poor old folks inside were certainly dead.
At that point, I tore my eyes away from the carnage, and looked around myself. There was a large crowd of people gathered, looking at the scene in horror. I saw Emily there, and I called her over and held her, shielding her face from what was happening, looking away myself...
And then I woke up.
After I woke up, I grabbed a legal pad and a pencil (thank God my room's a pit and stuff like that is just lying on the floor) and wrote down all the details I could remember.
